Sony's Horizon live service game is reportedly in trouble

Earlier this year, Sony announced Horizon Hunters Gathering, a brand-new entry into Guerrilla Games' Horizon series but with a live service focus. The multiplayer game had characters with unique abilities, a rogue-like perk system, and even a social hub for customizing your characters. While nothing official has materialized about the game since its announcement, a new report says that its development is going through some trouble.

The report comes from Bloomberg's Jason Schreier, who has managed to get details about Horizon Hunters Gathering's development from internal sources.

While the game hasn't been canceled yet, the report says that the Guerrilla team has until December to impress Sony executives with what they have. It's said that there are already plans to move developers from this to other projects by the end of the year.

The problem seems to stem from negative player feedback from the private testing that Sony kicked off with the Horizon Hunters Gathering announcement back in February 2026.

The team is reportedly attempting to rip out the live service elements and transform the game into a more traditional co-op game with a storyline, but with a smaller scope. We will have to wait and see if the studio manages to pull this off by the deadline and convince Sony to give it more development time to complete the new vision.

Schreier also adds that almost all of the staff at Guerrilla Games have been working on this live service project for years now, pushing back the mainline single-player series "far, far away." It sounds like fans will be waiting years to find out what happened after the events of Horizon Forbidden West.

Sony hasn't been having too much luck with live service games in recent years. It canceled multiple live service projects in 2025 following Concord's failure and even laid off a large chunk of Bungie recently after halting Destiny 2 updates.
