Disney+’s Cancelled Revival Of The Sandlot Franchise & Potential Future Addressed By Star
20th Century Fox Film Corp.Disney+ has decided not to take a swing at a revival of The Sandlot.
The streamer’s planned series built around characters from the original 1993 comedy about a group of baseball-loving kids in the ‘60s was announced way back in 2019, with OG cast members set to return. But rather than go for a hit with a nostalgic Sandlot reboot, Disney checked up and watched the pitch sail on by.
But there’s always tomorrow for revival dreams to come true, and that’s what Sandlot star Patrick Renna wanted to talk about in recent remarks addressing the reboot’s failure to entice Disney into taking a hack (via ComicBook.com). "They were toying with doing a sequel, and it’s tough, because it’s not like taking the actual original IP and trying to better it, because to do that is impossible,” Renna began.
The Hamilton “Ham” Porter actor continued, “How do you better that? That was lightning in a bottle. So I get very nervous about doing something like that anyway.” Renna then named someone he would like to work with on a Sandlot revival, should the opportunity come around again. “I don’t know. If Disney did decide to do it, or someone decided to remake it, it would be great. I always joke I’ll do it if Shawn Levy directs it, because you want it to be brilliant. You don’t want it to tarnish that legacy that’s meant so much to people.”
As the creator of Stranger Things, Levy knows his way around a project that’s all about hammering the nostalgia button while wrangling a bunch of young actors. As for the original cast of The Sandlot, who were kids when the film was made but are now middle-aged, Renna revealed recently that he’s getting a lot of the band back together for a non-IP baseball-themed TV show in which they would all play dads of kids who love ball.
“At the end of June, I’m filming a TV show called Little League Dads,” the Sandlot star said in a June 2026 interview with The Movie Nerds. “They’re going to be five minutes each and I’m going to put them on my YouTube channel and I’m having all of The Sandlot guys in it. We’re all going to be the dads. It won’t have any Sandlot IP in it, but it will be a reunion of the cast at least and that should be fun. As far as a Sandlot sequel goes, we’ll see - you never know.”
The original Sandlot grossed $34 million worldwide back in 1993, spawning the direct-to-video sequels The Sandlot 2 and The Sandlot: Heading Home, along with countless Wendy Peffercorn and Squints couples' Halloween costumes. A prequel movie was also reported to be in development as of 2018, but there have been no updates on the project.
