How to unlock Halo: Campaign Evolved's 'Campaign Remix' mode

Halo: Campaign Evolved is a faithful recreation of the legendary first-person shooter that started it all, but it’s so much more than that.

In our review we praised the lovingly recreated main campaign and the decent prequel missions, but what stood out to us most was an all-new game mode, Campaign Remix.

This wacky, wonderful gameplay option involves one of the game’s main collectibles: skulls. You’ll find these hidden throughout the levels and each one has its own unique effect on gameplay.

Some are returning classics from previous Halo games, but some of the new ones are absolutely insane.

How to unlock Campaign Remix, which skulls to collect and how the mode works

To unlock the Campaign Remix mode all you need to do is find two of the hidden skulls found throughout the levels.

It doesn’t matter what order you find them in, and the first can be grabbed as soon as the game begins, Master Chief emerges from his Cryo-Pod in The Pillar of Autumn. If you look up at the glass window, look to the right and you’ll see a walkway suspended in the air. Jump up to that using some nearby barrels then head towards the window and you’ll see the skull on a ledge.

The second skull can be found in the same level once you’ve met Captain Keyes for the first time. Instead of heading out into the corridors once you’ve acquired the pistol head back and walk to the window overlooking space. There’ll be a hole in the floor between two of the technicians and down there is where you’ll find your next skull.

Once you’ve acquired both, the next time you go to the game’s main menu you’ll have the option to start a Campaign Remix playthrough.

It’ll switch on the two skulls you acquired to unlock the mode, but there are three skulls that are always switched on by default.

These include randomised weapon spawns, Classic Covenant, Flood and Brute factions all active at once, and enemy factions won’t fight each other.

It makes for a very unique playthrough of Halo: Campaign Evolved and that’s only scratching the surface of what modifiers you can have active.

Other skulls make Grunts explode when they die, give all weapons unlimited ammo and even change the camera to third-person.

You can either let Campaign Remix randomise what skulls are active or you can pick-and-choose whichever ones you’d prefer.

It’s without a shadow of doubt the best addition to the game, and it’s going to make Legendary playthroughs of the game so much more entertaining.

Halo: Campaign Evolved is out now for early-access participants on Xbox Series X/S, PC and for the first time in Halo’s history, PlayStation 5. The game will unlock for standard edition owners on July 28, and it’s also included in your Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscription.
