William Shatner is back in a new Star Trek movie beaming down to the big screen this year.
From 1966 to 1994, Shatner starred as Captain James T. Kirk in the Star Trek franchise, first taking command of the USS Enterprise in the second pilot episode of the original television series and making his final appearance in the seventh film, Star Trek Generations. Now, Shatner is set to return in a new Star Trek movie.
According to Deadline, a documentary titled The Sixty-Year Mission: How Star Trek Changed Television and The World will debut in Regal Cinemas across the United States on October 9 for the franchise's 60th anniversary.
The documentary explores the origins of the original Star Trek television series and includes interviews with franchise icons William Shatner, Walter Koenig (who played Ensign Pavel Chekov), and George Takei (who portrayed Lieutenant Hikaru Sulu). Shatner also serves as an executive producer on the film, for which the poster and official synopsis can be seen below:
This epic documentary reveals how bold artistic choices, behind-the-scenes conflicts, and groundbreaking ideas came together to create an enduring television classic. Through exclusive interviews and never-before-seen archival materials, The Sixty-Year Mission uncovers that truth is indeed stranger than science-fiction.
The documentary also features interviews with Star Trek writers, directors, producers, critics, celebrity fans, and stars, including Gene Roddenberry Jr., the son of Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry, and Jonathan Frakes and Brent Spiner from The Next Generation.
Also featured are Gates McFadden from Picard, Ethan Peck and Christina Chong from Strange New Worlds, Robert Picardo from Voyager and Starfleet Academy, Denise Crosby from The Next Generation, and Nana Visitor from Deep Space Nine.
The documentary is written and directed by Mark A. Altman, the author of the Star Trek oral history book The Fifty-Year Mission, and produced by Michael S. Broder, who says the theatrical release will feature appearances from Star Trek talent for in-person Q&A sessions at select screenings. Altman also said:
