Sony Just Killed The Last of Us Multiplayer Yet Again

Earlier this year, a fan-made imagination of a full-fledged multiplayer mod for The Last of Us Part II was revealed, and in June, a lengthy gameplay trailer was posted online. The mod’s creation was nothing short of stellar, and over the last few months, the creator behind the mod, Speclizer, was extremely transparent about everything they were doing.

Unfortunately, Sony Interactive Entertainment has waded onto the scene months after the multiplayer mod was revealed and broadcast online, issuing a ‘letter’ ordering Speclizer to never let the mod see the light of day.

The Negative Press Train Keeps Rolling

Sony has found itself in hot water numerous times in the last few months. Several weeks ago, the company revealed an intention to stop producing physical games for new PlayStation titles as of January 2028. That piece of news had global ramifications and has resulted in Sony becoming even more of a villainous entity in the gaming space than it ever was.

The latest blip, the eradication of an incredible multiplayer mod for The Last of Us, might not seem major to some, but those who were looking forward to it are up in arms all over again.

In 2023, Naughty Dog was forced to cancel a developing multiplayer-centric title in The Last of Us’ universe, a decision that still rankles with fans today. It was dubbed the ‘best multiplayer game ever‘ by some developers, and it’s something that has never sat well with any fans of the legendary post-apocalyptic franchise.

Now, Sony has wiped out another potential source of multiplayer madness for The Last of Us, ordering Speclizer, a modder, not to release their TLOU2 Multiplayer mod.

In a post on social media, Speclizer explained:

Hey everyone, as you all know, the TLOU 2 Multiplayer mod that has been in development since January was supposed to release this month. Unfortunately I recently received a letter on behalf of Sony Interactive Entertainment requesting for the mod not to be released.

Extremely sad that this never got to see the light of day but I hope you’ll continue to follow me onto the next project, this time something of my own. Thank you all for the incredible amount of support over the last year. I hope to bring you something bigger and better soon!

In the comments under the post, those looking forward to the mod lambasted Sony multiple times over. The hate came thick and fast, and many started planning for some avenue to get the mod released, by hook or by crook.

One user was quick to point out that the biggest misstep from Speclizer was to ‘paywall’ access to the multiplayer mod on their Patreon page, effectively monetizing the creation, which is the biggest no-no imaginable.

Another was rather pragmatic, taking a realist approach to the situation:

I really don’t know why you people keep wasting your time with these fan made projects. They always get cease and desisted. I don’t agree with it, but it can’t be stopped and is just how things go. But for some reason every keeps trying as if they’re going to be different.
