Star Wars Outlaws is free in limited-time AAA offer that'll save you $70

It’s unfortunate that Star Wars Outlaws required several post-launch updates in order to reach its full potential.

Massive Entertainment’s 2024 action-adventure underperformed at launch, with many writing off the open-world title as another contrived Ubisoft flop.

While it did sell 1,000,000 copies within its first month, the title underperformed compared to expectation.

It’s a great shame, as those post-launch tweaks - particularly to the game’s stealth segments - transformed it into a must-play.

There is a silver lining though, as Star Wars Outlaws is currently free to play on PC for many, so this may be the sign you needed to give the game another go.

Star Wars Outlaws is included in this month’s Amazon Luna free game line-up, formerly known as Prime Gaming.

If you subscribe to Amazon Prime, that means you can play Star Wars Outlaws for no cost whatsoever.

Star Wars Outlaws has been added to Amazon Luna Standard which specifically means that you can stream the title, so you don’t even need a decent gaming PC.

Luna Standard allows for instant play across compatible devices like PCs, laptops, smart TVs, and smartphones.

Again, this is included for free within every single Amazon Prime subscription; it’s perhaps, though, a service that you haven’t utilised before.

Luna Standard also supports cross-device play if you want to hop between compatible devices.

Star Wars Outlaws has been overhauled based on player feedback

Star Wars Outlaws centres around scoundrel Kay Vess, taking place between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi.

Kay, alongside adorable companion Nix, wants a better life and will align herself with several of the galaxy’s crime syndicates in search of that life.

It’s completely up to you which crime syndicates you side with, and that’ll influence how the story plays out.

There are four key syndicates: the Pyke Syndicate, Crimson Dawn, the Hutt Cartel, and the Ashiga Clan.

Star Wars Outlaws is probably actually best compared to Red Dead Redemption 2 in the way that it heavily utilises an immersive open-world wanted system.

Many also compare the title to Naughty Dog’s Uncharted franchise due to the way that it combines third-person combat with strong storytelling and fluid traversal - and I can vouch for that.

While Star Wars Outlaws fared decently with critics, securing a ‘Generally Favourable’ score of 75 on Metacritic, it was arguably the game’s troubled stealth that immediately drove players away.

Instant fail states and forced stealth quickly became tiresome for some, but those fail states were subsequently patched out with detection AI also vastly improved.

While I only played the title after the stealth overhaul, a colleague who played both versions of Star Wars Outlaws admitted they were jealous that the overhauled version of Outlaws was my first impression of the game, as it is markedly better than what was present at launch.

It isn’t purely PC players who get to enjoy this one for free

Alongside its inclusion on Amazon Luna, Star Wars Outlaws is also included in the Ultimate tier of Xbox Game Pass, plus its available via PlayStation Plus’ extra catalogue, so there are plenty of opportunities across platforms to give it a go.

With a RRP price of £69.99 / $69.99, nabbing this one for free makes for a respectable saving, although it does often hold limited-time discounts.

It’ll likely take you around 20 hours to work through Star Wars Outlaws’ main story, but you could be looking at well over three times that for a completionist playthrough.

At this stage, it's looking unlikely that Star Wars Outlaws will receive a sequel despite that being the original plan.

Reports surfaced last year claiming that pre-production had been halted on such a project due to a disappointing reception to this first game.

It would need a mammoth comeback for Ubisoft to give the project a green light.

At the very least though, perhaps with this free offering, more gamers will have the opportunity to see that Star Wars Outlaws is better than expected.
