Steam slashes iconic series by 90% this weekend ahead of next franchise release

As we quickly approach D-day for Grand Theft Auto, prepared to part with a full wad of cash in excahnage for months of stellar gameplay, there is a huge craving to save money but find a similar dopamine hit.

The search for free games has seen Xbox Game Pass and PlayStation Plus subscriptions pull out some wildcard choices like Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy.

Steam is also ramping up its freebies and huge discounts, keeping us ticking over to November.

Now, one major AAA title has now seen its price get slashed by 90% this weekend, as Ubisoft is pushing a familiar franchise towards a big future.

Far Cry 6 is now just £5 on Steam, down from £50.

As the last standalone game in the Far Cry series, the sixth title has long been a divisive one, serving as a good game on its own, while franchise fans may consider it one of the weaker titles. It earned a 71% positive review status on Steam.

Yet with big things coming up from Ubisoft, and five other games in the series that come cheap enough, this could be the entry point into Far Cry that you've always needed, but never been able to access.

What's happening with the future of Far Cry?

The Far Cry 6 action leads up to the next instalment of the franchise, and while we've long been without confirmation of the seventh game, there is more to come from Ubisoft.

Announced last year, Far Cry is getting a TV series adaptation, which is quickly gaining pace. Just last week, it was announced that filming had begun on the series, with a huge pyrotechnic display in Malaga, Spain, setting the tone.

The series is set to be an anthology based on the video game franchise, bringing a new story and setting to each of its seasons, all set within the same universe.

As for the gaming mediums, Far Cry 7 has long been rumoured and reportedly leaked online in November of last year, but Ubisoft continues to skirt around any officialt confirmation.

However, a spinoff currently operating under the 'codename Kodiak' alias was confirmed to have passed the initial pitch phase at Ubisoft last month, which will be an open-world shooter that where 'player-driven stories take center stage.'
