111-Episode Time Travel Franchise Officially Returns With A New Season Next Month
A long-running historical time-travel franchise is coming back next month with a new season for its spinoff series. At 101 episodes, a beloved time-travel series came to an end in May 2026. Fortunately for fans, a spinoff premiered just a year earlier with 10 episodes, and now that show will return.
Outlander, based on the book series of the same name by Diana Gabaldon, premiered on Starz on August 14. The series tells the story of Claire Randall (Caitríona Balfe), a former WWII nurse, who, while on holiday in Scotland, is suddenly transported back to 1743, in the middle of the Jacobite rising.
There, she meets a Highland warrior named Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan) and the pair embark on a romance across continents and time. It's an excellent historical fantasy, and news of the prequel show, Outlander: Blood of My Blood, was a welcome, unexpected present for those dreading the end of the series.
Another gift came just a month before the prequel aired, when it was announced the series was already renewed for a second season. Blood of My Blood season 2 is set to premiere on September 18, 2026, and will hope to keep up the quality that earned Blood of My Blood an 87% on Rotten Tomatoes.
The first season of Blood of My Blood follows two relationships, a budding one between Jamie's parents in 18th-century Scotland, and a matured one between Claire's parents in World War I-era England. Claire's parents end up time-traveling and encounter Jamie's parents, and romance and violence ensue, leading to a cliffhanger season ending.
Blood Of My Blood Season 2 Continues The Story After Outlander's Ending
Outlander: Blood of My Blood is looking to continue the story right where season 1 left off and keep the universe alive for another season. At the end of Blood of My Blood season 1, Henry (Jeremy Irvine) and Julia (Hermione Corfield), Claire's parents, make their way back to the standing stones with baby William.
In an effort to save his family, William tricks Julia into going back through the portal with William but the episode ends without showing if William was able to go through. Nor is it shown what happens when the approaching Arch Bug (Terence Rae) arrives to claim Henry's head.
Brian (Jamie Roy) and Ellen (Harriet Slater) are able to slip away from Malcolm (John Lumsden) and make their way to relative safety, though the sounds of war preparations in the hills signal danger ahead. The trailers for Blood of My Blood season 2 suggest the show will be picking up right where we left off.
Outlander Is Quietly One Of The Most Consistently Good Franchises Right Now
Outlander does not get the same acclaim as other franchises, but it deserves it. Eight seasons and 101 episodes is a long time for a show to be on, and Outlander was consistently excellent through all of it. Every season seemed to improve upon the next, and the finale was a fitting, satisfying goodbye.
The show ran through some of the most historical moments of the 18th and 19th centuries, but managed to still feel grounded, focusing the story on the moving, tear-jerking romance between Jamie and Claire. Now combined with Outlander: Blood of My Blood, the Outlander franchise is one that deserves to be compared to the other big fantasy heavy hitters on TV.
