The Last Of Us Meets Dead Island In New Free PlayStation Plus Hit
From massive open-worlds to indie darlings, for the most part, even if it's just for a handful of minutes, each game in the PlayStation Plus library is worth experimenting with. Of course, that can make things a tad difficult, as when there is so much to play, the default response is, more often than not, to play absolutely nothing. Fortunately, while the numerous libraries of games available across each tier of PlayStation Plus are a great curation of some of the industry's best, they can all be skipped in favor of just a handful of the service's greatest.
One such title has proven to be a smash-hit among users, not least because it ostensibly merges the very best elements of The Last of Us with the chaos and open-world shenanigans of Dead Island. However, while this incredible game is completely free on the service right now, and, indeed, one of the best games currently on PlayStation Plus, it won't be there forever. So, those interested in a huge zombie-filled open-world action title, and want to play it for free, will need to act fast.
PlayStation Plus Subscribers Shouldn't Miss This One
When so many games are added to PlayStation Plus all of the time, it can be hard to know exactly what to play. Sure, those who just play exclusively the games handed out for free on the PS Plus Essential tier and absolutely nothing else should have an easy enough time choosing. However, for those of us with endless backlogs, access to other PlayStation Plus tiers and their respective libraries of incredible games, and enough disposable income to waste on the newest games releasing, the choice is so much harder.
Fortunately, among the games added to PS Plus in August stands a candidate that may be worth your time. This title, which I strongly maintain should absolutely not be skipped (so long as you can handle a scare or two), is Dying Light 2: Stay Human, a game that was partially panned at launch, but is easily one of the finest open-world zombie titles, and ranks rather highly for the wider open-world genre as a whole. For those looking for a criminally underrated open-world title that captures the feel of The Last of Us, this is the game for you.
Dying Light 2 Is Seriously Underrated
Developed by the same folks behind the original Dead Island, Dying Light 2 is a fairly respectable successor to the critically acclaimed first entry, offering refined parkour across a huge open-world that's filled with a palpable sense of lingering dread. While its narrative can't hold a candle to The Last of Us, it is this sense of pervading tension and unrelenting fear that makes exploring Dyling Light 2's gorgeous vistas and crumbling skyscrapers so utterly enjoyable.
It helps that maneuvering across Dying Light 2's staggeringly enormous map is a lot of fun. Techland absolutely perfected the parkour from the previous Dying Light game, upping the speed, actions available to the player, animations, and usefulness in combat. Zipping across rooftops, pummeling zombies and raiders as you leap from building to building, traversing hordes of zombies on ground level by narrowly hopping over fences or over cars never gets old.
When combat and racing across the streets of Villedor isn't possible, players will need to utilize the game's stealth mechanics to sneak their way through nail-bitingly tense encounters, and this, once again, is where Dying Light 2 feels like TLOU. Of course, for those who prefer the chaos, customizability, and action of Dead Island, that is absolutely also a viable strategy and increasingly enjoyable too. Dying Light 2 may not be the greatest game ever made, but it is an incredibly fun open-world title that went sorely overlooked and, hopefully, will enjoy its much deserved second chance on PlayStation Plus.
