Noah Wyle’s Flynn Carsen “Face-Off” & More OG Librarians Returns Teased Ahead Of The Next Chapter Season 2 Premiere

The Librarians: The Next Chapter season 2 will feature a couple returning faces, and the team are ready for many more.

The new season in the long-running fantasy adventure franchise will see the new group of Librarians, led by Callum McGowan's Vikram, as they return to the Metropolitan Public Library to investigate more dangerous magical threats, while also looking into the arrival of Dominic Monaghan's Merlin. The Librarians: The Next Chapter season 2 will also come with the returns of Christian Kane as Jacob Stone after guest appearances in season 1 and Lindy Booth as Cassandra Cain.

Now, ahead of the show's August 2 return, ScreenRant's Ash Crossan interviewed Christian Kane, Callum McGowan, Jessica Green, Olivia Morris, Bluey Robinson, Lindy Booth and Dean Devlin to discuss The Librarians: The Next Chapter season 2 in our San Diego Comic-Con 2026 media suite. When asked about a potential wishlist of other returning stars, Kane began by expressing his hopes for "everyone" to come back, going on to specifically name Rebecca Romijn's Eve, the previous team's Guardian, and John Laroquette as former Annex caretaker Jenkins.

McGowan went on to opine that The Librarians: The Next Chapter could "get the whole world completely back together again," with the star pushing for Noah Wyle to return as Flynn Carsen and "have a Librarians face-off" between Vikram and Flynn's teams. Kane concurred that part of why he and many others continue to collaborate with Devlin on the series is his ability to "create such a great atmosphere":

Christian Kane: We've always had the most unbelievable guest stars. Some people may not want a guest star because they're stars, but they say yes to him. They say yes to the show. And we've always had some of the most unbelievable people come in. Dominic [Monaghan] came in this year. You can't get that guy on another show. We got him. Dean provides a very safe place and a very fun place to work, and guest stars rarely say no. That's the fun of it. They see the show that these guys are doing, the show that we've done, and they're like, "Man, yeah, let me come do that." And that's just that's a testament to him.

While Devlin cautioned that he didn't want to tease which other characters will appear in The Librarians: The Next Chapter season 2, he did share that there "are so many characters I'd like to bring back" if the show continues beyond its upcoming season. The franchise boss further explained that one of the goals with the sequel show is to avoid audiences from having "any problems understanding what's happening" if they didn't watch the original:

Dean Devlin: But if you've been a longtime fan, you get all these extra Easter eggs and all these extra things that are delicious. So that would be the thing, trying to figure out who we could bring back where I don't have to explain two seasons of the character, but the fans will go, "Oh my God, they're back."

Ever since the show's initial development in 2024, the big question on franchise fans' minds has been whether Wyle would reprise his role as original Librarians lead Flynn Carsen. The sequel's production did ultimately overlap with his hit HBO Max medical drama The Pitt, which also impacted his involvement in Devlin's other sequel series Leverage: Redemption season 3.

Devlin previously explained to ScreenRant that part of the reason for Wyle's lack of involvement beyond being a producer was his desire to hold out for a potential solo Librarian effort, either in a movie or in a revival of the original series to run alongside The Next Chapter. It wouldn't be out of the realm of possibility for either to happen, as the franchise first launched with a trilogy of movies led by the two-time Emmy winner, and he returned for a recurring appearance in the subsequent TV expansion.

McGowan's desire to have Wyle return for a "face-off" between the two teams of Librarians should come as an interesting idea for fans of the franchise. Vikram is certainly a drastically different personality from Flynn, being more willing to utilize magic in his adventures rather than stick to The Library's rule of not doing so, while also being more self-centered and ego-driven than his successor.

Given Jessica Green's Charlie has her own unique history with The Library, having been previously rejected by Eve to become a Guardian before getting a new chance in season 1, Vikram might not be the only new team member who'd find themselves butting heads with Flynn in his return. However, with Olivia Morris' Dr. Lysa Pascal and Bluey Robinson's Connor proving better team players, they may find themselves intrigued at the prospect of meeting more original characters in The Librarians: The Next Chapter's future.

The Librarians: The Next Chapter season 2 premieres on TNT on Sunday, August 2 at 9 p.m. ET.
