Arc Raiders’ Brave Shutdown of Expeditions in 2027 Could Finally Be the Turnaround the Game Needs

In a surprising development, creators at Embark Studios are shutting down a popular game mode in ARC Raiders, making it inaccessible for a short time. This is intended to address the intense player complaints and criticisms the extraction shooter has been getting lately, hopefully transforming the game by fixing its biggest problems. With Early 2027 slated as a time for the game’s “Expeditions” mode to return, players are eager to see what exactly will be changed while the title is away.

It’s no secret that matchmaking adjustments in ARC Raiders have been at the forefront of player concerns, as well as the rampant cheating that occurs in the game across all modes. At the same time, endgame content within the shooter is sometimes alienating to players, with Expeditions often getting the way of new content added to the game. For example, Expeditions tend to come out right before a major update, preventing players from accessing fresh rewards or earning prestige for their raider characters until the Expedition ends.

Arc Raiders Closes Its Expeditions Mode Until Early 2027 To Make “Several Major Improvements”

A recent post on Embark’s official site for ARC Raiders announced that the fifth Expedition for the game would be the last one for quite some time, shutting down that mode temporarily. Based on quotes from the developer’s statement, Expeditions “will return with major improvements, tackling some of the biggest player pain points.” With the upcoming Frozen Trail expansion for the game slated to release in October 2026, this means Expeditions will be left out of any updates for the foreseeable future.

Additional comments from ARC Raiders creators have mentioned a number of these “pain points” that players have raised since launch, citing some common complaints seen in and around Expeditions. The unrewarding nature of Expeditions have been up there with player cheats as a chief issue in ARC Raiders, making this news excellent for veterans of the game since that mode was available. Some of the problems Embark Studios plans to address during the Expedition hiatus include:

  • Tight departure windows related to Expeditions
  • Reward structure of the Expeditions mode
  • Multiple smaller fixes throughout any Expedition
  • New accessibility features for new Expeditions

These Expedition changes come after ARC Raiders has slowly declined in player count over the last few updates, mostly due to the existence of the issues that have defined the game more and more. Expeditions are a smaller microcosm of greater issues, but the lack of great quests, rewards, and other systems in that mode easily make it the most lackluster portion of the extraction shooter. The fact that Embark Studios is taking the time to re-evaluate the mode shows how they recognize Expeditions’ faults, and are willing to go the extra mile to address them.

New Content & Changed Systems Now Finally Have Time To Reflect Player Feedback Properly

Thankfully, Expeditions being gone doesn’t prevent players from earning rewards from quests already established in the mode before it goes away. The “quiet period” of Expeditions will still have some active bonuses if players have already invested time into the mode from any past efforts. Even though other aspects of Expeditions will be reset, like Caravans, players will receive placeholders or other compensation for the live service elements of ARC Raiders. These live service features are among the features players have hated the most, so seeing them changed for the better already does inspire some hope.

Realizing that one game mode doesn’t live up to the rest of a game’s standards sometimes leads to very slow changes in any other title, but removing Expeditions entirely gives ARC Raiders more room to grow. This way, Embark Studios can fully attempt to inject new mechanics and systems into Expeditions through internal playtesting, taking time to evaluate which parts of player feedback to apply. Since there is no exact month or date for the Expedition return window, players won’t have an unrealistic expectation for the mode to be solved right away.

Mode Shutdowns Could Allow Arc Raiders To Be Redefined Or Revived Based On What Gets Fixed

Although Embark likely doesn’t want to get rid of the core modes within ARC Raiders, they could disable other content to fix it when Expeditions go back up again. Too few live service games are brave enough to shut down parts of the experience to refine it, even when fans are begging for structural changes to certain modes, rewards, or other content. By keeping Expeditions or other game modes closed within ARC Raiders, player experiences are narrowed into places where feedback is easier to obtain or apply.

The worst Expedition systems in the game will, hopefully, be gone by the time they come back, giving players a refreshing sense that they’ve been listened to by developers. To Embark’s credit, the 2027 window for Expeditions’ return offers clear communication to why the mode is being removed, instead of leaving fans believing the mode will never return. Although not everyone plays Expeditions in ARC Raiders, the improvement of one game type will enhance the others, especially if parallel modes are also given fixes throughout various updates.
