KPop Demon Hunters Officially Joins An Elite Netflix Club & It Makes The Sequel More Exciting — Gaming

The success of KPop Demon Hunters continues, and while the world waits for its sequel, it has officially joined an elite Netflix club. Despite strong competition from other studios and streaming platforms, Netflix continues to be one of the most popular ones, and that’s in large part thanks to its original content. Some of Netflix’s original movies now rank among the best movies of all time, including a couple of animated movies.

Netflix’s biggest hit in animation is KPop Demon Hunters, directed by Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans. KPop Demon Hunters follows the K-pop girl group Huntrix, formed by Rumi, Mira, and Zoey. The Huntrix girls are not only big music stars but also the latest demon hunters, who must keep demons away from the human world. For that, they use their singing voices to create a barrier called Honmoon – however, their mission is complicated by the arrival of boy band Saja Boys, who are demons in disguise.

KPop Demon Hunters has been a massive success, breaking records for Netflix, winning different awards (including the Oscar for Best Animated Feature), and making way for lots of fun merch for fans to enjoy. Unsurprisingly, KPop Demon Hunters is getting a sequel, though it might not arrive until 2029 or later, but until then, the first movie has now joined an elite Netflix club thanks to its well-deserved home video release.

KPop Demon Hunters Is Getting A Rare Blu-ray Release

As a Netflix original movie, KPop Demon Hunters was released on the platform on June 20, 2025, but it had a limited theatrical release at select cinemas from June 20 to 26. After seeing the success of the movie on Netflix, KPop Demon Hunters was released in select theaters, but now in a sing-along version and in different countries, as opposed to the initial California and New York exclusive theatrical release.

KPop Demon Hunters later had another, though very brief, sing-along theatrical run from October 31 to November 2, and one more in June 2026 to celebrate the movie’s first anniversary. All this is enough for KPop Demon Hunters to stand out from other Netflix original movies, but in addition to its many theatrical runs, Huntrix and company are now part of an elite Netflix club as it’s getting a home media release.

In August 2026, Criterion announced that KPop Demon Hunters is getting a 4K Blu-ray special edition release, along with a two-disc Blu-ray version and a two-disc DVD one on November 3, 2026. Criterion’s announcement includes a look at the beautiful art in the 3-disc special Blu-ray edition, and it reveals the special features included in it:

New 4K digital master, approved by directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, with Dolby Atmos soundtrack
One 4K UHD disc of the film presented in Dolby Vision HDR and two Blu-rays with the film and special features

Thanks to this, KPop Demon Hunters is now joining other Netflix original movies that got the home media treatment thanks to their success and quality, as is the case for Alfonso Cuarón’s Roma, Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman, and Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio. A special home media release is further proof of the success, impact, and legacy of KPop Demon Hunters, and it continues its long streak of success and popularity.

KPop Demon Hunters 2 Can Be Even Bigger Than The First Movie

As mentioned above, KPop Demon Hunters is getting a sequel, but unfortunately, it’s going to be a long wait. In late 2025, it was teased that KPop Demon Hunters 2 would arrive in 2029, though months later, Sony Pictures Animation president Kristine Belson shared that it might not be finished by then. As disappointing as that is, it’s understandable, as there’s a lot of behind-the-scenes work in an animated musical movie, and even more for one as successful as KPop Demon Hunters.

Potential plot details for KPop Demon Hunters 2 are currently unknown, but Ejae, the singing voice for Rumi, has shared her interest in it changing musical genres to trot and heavy metal. What’s true is that KPop Demon Hunters 2 will need to be bigger than the first movie in terms of story, the characters’ roles and purpose, and the overall lore of this unique universe – and, of course, it will need some extra catchy songs.

Thanks to the success of the first movie, KPop Demon Hunters 2 could have a wider theatrical run from the beginning, and if it’s as impactful and popular as its predecessor, it could also get a home media release, making the franchise even more impressive and special.
