Hit New Turn-Based RPG Is Final Fantasy With Pirates

A character from Dead Weight faces an angel-like Abyss boss.

A new turn-based RPG that blends Final Fantasy with pirates has become an instant hit, and if you’re a fan of the genre or the franchise, you should consider checking it out right now. Tons of new games continue to be inspired by Square Enix’s series. A new RPG that mixes Final Fantasy and Clair Obscur, for example, is on its way and is expected to arrive in 2027. Of course, this isn’t the only title that the IP has inspired.

In fact, you can already test a new JRPG that mixes Final Fantasy with Chrono Trigger, and the gameplay is entirely free – even if the full version of the game has yet to be released. There are many ways the franchise has served as a foundation for other titles, be it in terms of gameplay, narrative structure, themes, party members, and more, and it has proven to continue being an important game to look at when crafting new ones.

Final Fantasy With Pirates Sounds Like An Instant Win

Dead Weight Ship Battle

Now, a recently released game called Dead Weight can be seen blending Final Fantasy with pirate themes, and it looks amazing. Released on July 16 by Klukva Games, the Dead Weight RPG on Steam is a turn-based RPG with strategy elements that make it look a lot like Final Fantasy Tactics. The battles take place among confined arenas, and your positioning on the grid is extremely important.

The cool thing about it is that players will be able to control a flying ship across floating islands, exploring them for loot and grinding for improvements. Along the way, they can be ambushed by sky pirates, not unlike the ones seen in Final Fantasy XII, for example. Players will also be able to take on Ancient Gods as they grow stronger and more apt to face these deities. Until July 30, the game is on sale on Steam, so be sure to pick it up if it interests you.

Dead Weight Is Getting Some Serious Love

Dead Weight Town

Dead Weight has been received with a ton of love from players so far. On Steam, it boasts an 85% Positive review status from players (at the time of writing), many of whom have left some pleasant reviews for the game. User WildeCard mentions that Dead Weight seems like a mix of Skies of Arcadia, Into the Breach, and Darkest Dungeon. User Ennui On Me says that it has “some of the best pixel art I have ever seen,” while also praising the gameplay and recommending it “at twice the price.

Players do highlight that the early portion of the game may be a bit challenging as you get used to the mechanics, but once you get past that, you’ll start soaring in Dead Weight. This is a smaller yet still excellent RPG release that has just arrived, and if you enjoy Final Fantasy vibes with sky pirates and cosmic horror themes, be sure to check it out.
