Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls Players Upset With Anti-Cheat, PSN Login, And Poor Performance On Steam
PC players were less than impressed with Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls during its beta a couple of weeks ago. It seems not much has changed between then and launch, as now the full game is here and it has debuted to Mixed reviews on Steam with a laundry list of reasons why those playing on the platform aren’t impressed.
Marvel Tokon Isn't Doing Too Hot On Steam
Marvel Tokon launched on PC and PS5 on Thursday, and early reviews on Steam paint a worrying picture for those who plan to play on the former. Only 43% of users to leave a review at this early stage have had anything positive to say, leaving the fighting game with Mixed reviews.
It’s flying dangerously close to falling into negative territory, which happens when a game’s Steam score hits 40% or lower.
There are various reasons why hundreds of players have already left negative reviews, but the main complaint is hostility towards those using Linux. Linux users are claiming Marvel Tokon straight up just won’t work for them, likely because the game uses anti-cheat software which, as the name implies, some games utilize to prevent hackers from cracking their games. Or, the more likely reason in this scenario, to cut down on potential online cheaters.
“This game has decided to stoop low to straight up block any Linux player from even launching the game,” one Steam review reads. “I'd love to say this is an amazing Marvel game, but it does not work on my $2,200 Steam Machine, or anything Linux for that matter,” another disappointed player writes.
Not a good look for the Steam Machine either, although as far as I can tell, complaints about how well it can run on Valve’s new console are few and far between compared to the Linux issue.
PSN Requirements For A PC Game Are Back
Right behind an inability to run the game on Linux in the Marvel Tokon complaint rankings is the PSN login of it all. Marvel Tokon is published by PlayStation, which means, even if you’re playing on Steam, you need a PlayStation account to log in and play. You don’t have to pay for it, but people playing on Steam are, once again, confused as to why they need a PSN account when they aren’t playing on PlayStation, similar to when this happened to Helldivers 2.
Whether it be the anti-cheat software holding it back or other issues, there are also complaints about how the game runs peppered among the Linux and PSN-themed reviews. The leading cause for complaint seems to be Marvel Tokon’s FPS not hitting the highs required for a fighting game of this calibre.
Whether PlayStation and Arc System Works plan to address these issues remains unclear. It’s unlikely PlayStation is going to back down on the PSN requirements since, as it has proved more than ever this past month through its plans for physical media, it doesn’t often cave to public demand. It also seems unlikely that the Linux issue will be addressed or resolved since the problem was raised during the beta and largely ignored.
