Every Jean Grey Actress In Live-Action Marvel Movies

In the history of the X-Men being in Marvel movies, Jean Grey can be counted as one with the most appearances, and that's given her a long list of actresses who have played the ultra-powerful mutant. Her prominent role in the films is unsurprising considering she's a founding member of the team in the comics, from her days as Marvel Girl to becoming Phoenix and everything in between.

Her telepathic and telekinetic abilities make Jean one of the strongest mutants ever, with her officially classified as an Omega-level mutant. Jean's innate powers are only amplified when she's tapped into the Phoenix Force. Her presence in Marvel movies stretches decades and different portrayals, but the red-headed mutant is still always a love interest for Cyclops and eventually caught in a poor adaptation of The Dark Phoenix Saga.

Jean is ultimately responsible for some of the biggest sequences in Marvel movie history. She's died multiple times to save others, but she's also killed key X-Men characters. And with her evolving psyche throughout the films, Jean is a complex role for actresses to tackle. This continues as Marvel Studios brings Jean Grey into the MCU, establishing her as a character who will be around for years to come.

Now that the mutant is in the MCU, Jean's history in Marvel movies gains an entirely new chapter as a new actress steps into the role. Most may think that there have only been three female stars to play the powerful X-Men character, but the full count is actually a bit longer.

5 Famke Janssen

When Fox decided to bring the X-Men to the big screen as a live-action franchise, there was never any doubt that Jean would be included. She's featured in X-Men as a core member of the team who is still learning about the full strength of her powers and dating Cyclops, even as Wolverine pursues her. Jean returned in X2 with greater control over her abilities and seemingly died at the end after tapping into the Phoenix Force to save the team.

Her story continued, though, in X-Men: The Last Stand. The movie revealed that she had been preserved in a coma underwater by the Phoenix Force and awoke to discover her mental blocks were gone. More powerful than ever before, she succumbed to her darker side and partnered with Magneto to take on humanity. That is, until Wolverine killed her to save everyone. Jean then returned one last time for a cameo in X-Men: Days of Future Past as part of a reset timeline.

This iteration of Jean is played by Famke Janssen. She had previously starred in GoldenEye and Rounders prior to making her Marvel movie debut. The role would bring opportunities for Janssen to star in the Taken franchise, appear in Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters, and others. Janssen's portrayal was so popular she returned for a cameo in The Wolverine as a dream version of Jean.

There are even rumors she'll return in Avengers: Doomsday, even though the actress has denied them. If not there, she could also still come back in Avengers: Secret Wars potentially.

4 Haley Ramm

Fox's X-Men franchise gave another actress a chance to play Jean Grey in X-Men: The Last Stand thanks to a flashback sequence. The movie opens with Charles Xavier and Erik Lehnsherr visiting a family whose daughter has recently developed abilities. That daughter turns out to be Jean, explaining just how far back her relationship goes with the two mutant leaders.

While The Last Stand de-aged Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen for this scene, Haley Ramm was cast to play the younger Jean rather than do the same digital trickery to Janssen. Ramm was only 13 when she filmed the sequence and fresh off a role in Yours, Mine & Ours. She'd go on to have roles in many TV shows, like The Originals, but Hamm never played Jean again.

3 Sophie Turner

The role of Jean Grey was recast a few years later to introduce a fresh version of her in X-Men: Apocalypse. She's already been part of Xavier's school for some time when the movie begins and has been undergoing training to control her powers. She eventually becomes part of the X-Men team and is responsible for defeating Apocalypse after tapping into her full abilities.

From there, Jean's story continued in Dark Phoenix. The second movie adaptation of The Dark Phoenix Saga saw Jean's powers change after being exposed to cosmic energy. She struggles to control the newfound powers, killing Mystique in one sequence. Jean ultimately wipes out the shape-shifting alien Vuk and seemingly sacrifices herself in the process.

This iteration of Jean is brought to life by Sophie Turner. Having already broken out for her role as Sansa Stark on Game of Thrones, Turner took over as Jean when she was only 20 years old. She has done several movies and TV shows since her time as the mutant came to an end after Dark Phoenix's poor reception and Marvel Studios getting the X-Men's film rights.

2 Summer Fontana

Dark Phoenix is also responsible for giving another actress a chance to play Jean, though. The movie includes a flashback to her childhood where she can't control her powers while her parents argue in a car, resulting in a fatal crash for them. She survives and is taken in by Xavier, who suppresses aspects of her abilities from that point on.

Playing the eight-year-old version of Jean is Summer Fontana. She had a recurring role in The Originals before this part. Fontana has gone on to make multiple-episode appearances in The Ousider, The Magicians, and Legacies​​​​​​.

1 Sadie Sink

The MCU got its version of Jean Grey thanks to Spider-Man: Brand New Day. The movie introduced the telepath as a mysterious threat to Damage Control, only to reveal she was looking for her kidnapped sister, Sara Grey, who died during experimentation by the organization. Tests done on Jean unlocked more of her abilities. After a conversation with Spider-Man inside Peter Parker's mind, she came to move past her anger.

Sadie Sink plays Jean Grey in the MCU. She made waves as Max on Netflix's Stranger Things, but she had also previously appeared in The Whale. Her debut in Spider-Man: Brand New Day is just the start to her journey as Jean Grey. She'll reportedly be back for Avengers: Secret Wars, and Sink is confirmed to be part of the MCU's X-Men movie cast.

Now that she's the fifth actress to play Jean, Sink will look to become the longest-tenured actress in the role and rack up the most appearances. Both marks are currently held by Janssen, with five movie roles across 14 years. Even if the latter doesn't quite happen, she's positioned to play Jean for years to come as the X-Men become a prominent fixture of the MCU.
