Kingdom Hearts Has Officially Grossed A Staggering $1 Billion
As We All Wait For Kingdom Hearts 4 At D23, Disney Labels The Series One Of Its Biggest Gaming Franchises
Disney has just shared a report about how games are “helping shape” its next chapter, which puts Kingdom Hearts as the headliner for Disney & Pixar Games.
Considering how long we waited for news on Kingdom Hearts 4 and how quiet the series has been since 2020’s Melody of Memory, it’s easy to assume that Square Enix and Disney aren’t that excited about Sora and the gang. That’s certainly changed over the past few weeks, though, with Kingdom Hearts getting a new lease of life.
The second trailer for Kingdom Hearts 4 at the recent Nintendo Direct was already a good sign for the series, but now it’s primed to have a big panel at D23 tomorrow, one which Disney is actively advertising. As if that wasn’t clear enough of a sign that big things are coming, Disney is now gassing up the series and revealing how much money it’s made.

Earlier today, a blog post was shared on the Walt Disney Company's official site titled “How Games Are Helping Shape Disney’s Next Chapter”. The article focuses on Disney’s various gaming works, including with Marvel, Lucasfilm, 20th Century Games, and, of course, Disney & Pixar Games.
Considering how stacked the roster of Disney & Pixar Games is, including stuff like Disney Dreamlight Valley that’s pretty mainstream and more obvious pick, it’s a very nice surprise to see Kingdom Hearts included as the headliner of that branch of Disney games in the roundup image. Sora is shown next to my beloved Cal Kestis, Wolverine, and Amanda Ripley, all pretty massive stars.
I think it says a lot about how malnourished Kingdom Hearts fans have been that I’m surprised to see Sora instead of bloody Disney Speedstorm or something.
The post also reveals that Kingdom Hearts is one of nine franchises under Disney games that’s grossed over $1 billion at retail, with Marvel Strike Force being the only other confirmed big winner. Disney Solitaire, Disney Tsum Tsum, and Disney Magic Kingdoms are also said to have reached 1 billion installs, but that seems collective rather than each on its own.
Whatever the case, Kingdom Hearts officially grossing more than $1 billion at retail alone is a staggering feat for a series that’s mostly been silent for the past few years. Disney has seemed far more keen to talk about Kingdom Hearts than Square Enix lately, but sharing this before what’s assumed to be a big week is our best sign yet that exciting times are ahead.
