Game of Thrones Prequel Movie Confirmed, Centres On Aegon The Conqueror
A Song of Ice and Fire is a world that HBO and Warner Bros. Discovery are likely to continue adapting for a long time; two shows are currently airing: House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.
The idea of adapting Aegon's Conquest—the seminal event that shaped the Seven Kingdoms as we know them—has been floating around for almost a decade, having originally been envisioned as a television series.
The concept of a theatrical release emerged in 2024 and has been quietly progressing behind the scenes. Now, Warner Bros. Discovery has mentioned Aegon's Conquest in its recent slate.
Aegon's Conquest Will Release Beyond 2027
"Beyond 2027, the slate will continue to leverage iconic intellectual property, including the theatrical event film Aegon's Conquest from the Game of Thrones universe, the next instalment of The Matrix, the next Batman film, and a live-action Jetsons featuring Jim Carrey," reads the report.
Reports suggest filmmaker and writer Mattson Tomlin (The Batman) is involved in the project, as is the screenwriter Beau Willimon (House of Cards). However, neither has been officially announced as being attached to the movie.
Aegon's Conquest is the name given to the campaign of Aegon I Targaryen and his sisters, Visenya and Rhaenys, in which they subdued most of Westeros (all but Dorne) and reorganised the continent into a kingdom under Aegon.
This was achieved through the power of the trio's dragons, Aegon's Balerion, Visenya's Vhagar and Rhaenys's Meraxes. Viserys I (the father of Rhaenyra in House of the Dragon) was the last rider of Balerion before the dragon's natural death; Vhagar appears in the show as the mount of Aemond One-Eye Targaryen, and Meraxes was slain during the First Dornish War.
House of the Dragon is set around 70 years after Aegon's death; Viserys I is the fifth person to sit the Iron Throne, and the events of the show depict the power struggle that ensued following his death.
The Conquest features several notable historical events, such as the burning of Harrenhal, the surrender of Torrhen Stark ('The King Who Knelt') and the failed invasion of Dorne.
The event is essentially the genesis of A Song of Ice and Fire, and I suspect the filmmakers will tie the character of Aegon to the various prophecies and myths that underpin the adapted universe, as we've seen in House of the Dragon with Daemon and Rhaenyra.
