Hello Kitty is one of the world’s most beloved intellectual properties, with countless fans of its products and widespread recognition of its iconic kawaii design. Now, Sony aims to develop a new mascot, not specifically for its gaming brand, but one that can achieve universal appeal and potentially generate $62.8 million in annual sales by 2030.
Sony Eyes Nemu the Bear as a Hello Kitty Rival
This news comes from a Nikkei report stating that the goal is to create a character that can serve as the center of merchandise and various multimedia releases. A dedicated team was established in 2025 to work on this project in collaboration with creators both inside and outside the company.
The team reportedly has a strong track record in this market. They reportedly revitalized Snoopy’s presence in the Japanese market.
One of the characters in the running is named Nemu the Night Owl. He’s a bear character who can’t sleep because he’s so anxious about the state of the world. So far, the character has exceeded 100,000 social media followers in a year. The character is also being developed for merchandise and an anime adaptation.
The first candidate is “Nemū the Night Owl,” whose total number of followers on social media exceeded 100,000 in one year. He is a bear character who can’t fall asleep because he worries too much about small anxieties when he gets into bed, and ends up staying up late. SCP created the character in collaboration with Tsumupapa (Meguro, Tokyo), who specializes in character development.
It addresses everyday anxieties that everyone experiences, such as “when only your colleague sitting next to you at work gets a word from the boss” or “when you worry about whether you’re growing professionally,” and helps you come to terms with them with the support of those around you. It’s gaining support as a “medicine for the soul” for people in similar situations.
