Blade Runner 2099 Season 2's Fate Clarified By Prime Video Series Creator
Blade Runner 2099 season 2 has gotten its first update.
Created by Silka Luisa, who also serves as showrunner, the upcoming sci-fi series depicts a future in which Replicants hold power and humans live as second-class citizens. The first Blade Runner 2099 trailer was released earlier this week, confirming the eight-episode season will release on Prime Video on November 25.
Speaking with Collider, Luisa now confirms that no season 2 is planned for Blade Runner 2099. According to the creator, the show was always envisioned as a limited series, meaning the upcoming eight episodes will tell a complete story. Check out her comment below:
It was always considered as a limited series. Part of making the transition from film to TV is a really big jump for something that’s as cinematic as Blade Runner, and so, in that sense, it was really important to us that we told a story that, in a way, is like a movie in the sense that there’s a beginning, there’s a middle, and there’s an end. So we went into it with Alcon, with all of our producing partners, knowing we really want to tell a complete story. Eight episodes—I mean, eight’s my lucky number, that’s the number I would have picked, but it felt like the right amount for the story we were planning on telling.
It's worth noting that some shows that are billed as limited series can sometimes be picked up for additional seasons anyway, due to strong ratings and critical acclaim. Examples include Good Omens, Big Little Lies, and The White Lotus. Even if Blade Runner 2099 is a major hit, however, there's still no guarantee this will change its status as a limited series.
The upcoming Blade Runner TV show stars Hunter Schaffer, Michelle Yeoh, Tom Burke, Dimitri Abold, Johnny Harris, and Lewis Gribben, among others. As revealed in the trailer, Schafer plays Cora, a human fugitive who partners with Yeoh's Olwen, a dying replicant Blade Runner. Together, the pair work together to track down a rogue figure capable of destroying the new world order.
