Claude Creator Anthropic Sets Up Wet Lab for Biology Research

There has long been speculation that artificial intelligence could help humanity tackle some of its most difficult and seemingly unsolvable problems and expand its operational field to medical studies. It turns out that Anthropic, the company behind the Claude series of large language models, is already conducting physical experiments based on its AI research.

According to Reuters, Anthropic has established a wet biology lab to explore unlocking treatments for rare diseases. The company's head of life sciences, Eric Kauderer-Abrams, confirmed the lab's establishment: "We believe that to do biology, the final test is still and will be for a while in real lab work."

"We absolutely are doing that today, and I would describe our approach as being typical of what you would see in most biotech companies, where there's some amount of that that we're doing in our own facilities and some amount of that that we're working with external partners on."

An Anthropic spokesperson later clarified that the lab is not specifically focused on drug discovery. 

The information about the lab in the San Francisco Bay Area was later confirmed by TechCrunch; the source also reported that Anthropic shared that the lab's main focus was fundamental biology. According to the report, the Claude creator also wants to avoid giving the impression that it is competing with the pharmaceutical industry, where it has numerous major customers and partners. Reuters also reported, referring to anonymous sources, that Anthropic is embracing physical automation.

Anthropic has also been expanding its presence in life sciences, recently launching a Life Sciences Verification Program. According to Kauderer-Abrams, life sciences already represents one of Anthropic's largest areas of investment in terms of both personnel and resources, Reuters reported.
