PlayStation Plus Just Made One Of 2024's Best Games Free
If you're a PlayStation Plus user, you're probably aware of the sheer number of 10/10 games that are available on the Game Catalog at this point. It took a long time for Sony to gain ground in that regard, but eventually the Game Catalog built itself up through sheer force of will, and there are many games worth playing on it, from the retro era all the way to brand-new releases like Big Walk.
Truth be told, there's a lot of variety offered up on PlayStation Plus, dating all the way back to an era before the first PlayStation console even existed, thanks to tons of support for ports.
Thanks to a new update straight from PlayStation, we know that the Plus service just gained another heavy-hitter. Although this game is from 2024, it's still going strong and has accumulated tons of updates since then, with a lively community to boot.
After two long years, Helldivers 2, developed by Arrowhead Studios and published by Sony themselves, is coming to PlayStation Plus. It's available right now, as long as you have an Extra or Premium subscription.
As a reminder, PlayStation Plus has three tiers, from lowest to highest: Essential, Extra, and Premium. To gain access to Helldivers 2, you'll need the medium or highest-tier subscription to gain access to the Game Catalog. Since Essential just provides monthly games, online multiplayer, and a few perks like cloud storage and discounts, you won't be able to play Helldivers 2 on the lowest tier.
Helldivers 2 joining PlayStation Plus isn't the only big news for the game. It's also dropping its Devoid of Liberty update this week, which sees Super Earth forces driving back enemies in the Void. You'll embark on missions in new war-torn planets impacted by the Void, battle more enemies, and also gain more perks like dropships that fight alongside you.
There's also a merchandise store that's live now, which can require in-game achievements to unlock. It's a bit confusing, but you basically sign in using your preferred platform (which also includes PC and Xbox), then you can see what you can buy. The options now are a Private Teddy Snuggles Plush ($40) and a Hell Commander Pin ($25). This is very similar to what Bungie used to do with its Destiny shop.
Even if you don't partake in merch for Helldivers 2, it's worth trying out with your PlayStation Plus membership. If you bounce off of it, that's OK, as it's not going to be for everyone, but now is a good time to literally dive in.
