Jason Bourne 6 Script Gets First Reaction From Matt Damon

Jason Bourne 6 gets its most promising script update yet.

There hasn't been a new Bourne movie in 10 years now, with Matt Damon having last played the character back in 2016's Jason Bourne. A sixth installment in the franchise has been in the works for several years now, with All Quiet on the Western Front (2022) director Edward Berger loosely attached, but the project has struggled to move beyond the script stage.

During a recent interview on the Dan Patrick Show, Damon shares an encouraging update on Bourne 6, revealing that Berger has sent him the first act of the movie. Damon says that what he's seen is "really good" and that he's hopeful the sequel will eventually move forward. Check out his full comment below:

“We’re trying. Edward Berger is this phenomenal director and he really wants to do it. And I’ve been talking to him. He just sent me the first act – it looks really good. So I’m very hopeful that it will happen. Like me, he says unless it can kind of fit with those first three we did – unless it can be of that caliber – it’s like, don’t poke the bear. But if we really feel like we got a shot at doing something great, I’m all in. I love that character. It’s been an incredible part of my life. I’d love to do it again.”

Berger's take on All Quiet on the Western Front was a success for Netflix, earning praise for its strong direction and harrowing presentation of World War I. The filmmaker went on to direct Conclave (2024), which was nominated for eight Oscars, winning for Best Adapted Screenplay.

Though Berger's most recent effort, Ballad of a Small Player (2025), failed to repeat this success, he certainly has the resume to make a team-up with Damon for Bourne 6 an exciting proposition. With both Damon and Berger eager to make the movie a reality, it seems like it's really just a question of getting the script right.

Starting with a strong script is particularly important for Bourne 6 given the mixed reception to the two most recent installments. The Bourne Legacy (2012) attempted to reboot the franchise with Jeremy Renner as Aaron Cross, but the film disappointed at the box office, grossing $276 million worldwide. It also has a lackluster Rotten Tomatoes score of 56%.

2016's Jason Bourne featured the return of franchise veteran director Paul Greengrass, but the Greengrass and Damon reunion fell a little flat. Though a commercial hit at $415 million, the movie has a franchise-low Rotten Tomatoes score of 55%.

Story details for Bourne 6 are being kept under wraps, but it's now been 24 years since Damon debuted as the character in The Bourne Identity (2002). Any new film would presumably have to update the story and the character to make sense in the high-tech world of espionage that exists today.

If Berger and Damon can get the script right, now might be the perfect time to get Bourne 6 going. Damon is coming off of starring in Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey (2026), a film that has earned glowing reviews and is eying a box office run of over $1 billion. Though Jason Bourne 6 may not be a sure thing, it certainly sounds like progress continues to be made behind the scenes.
