Final Fantasy 9 Remake Leak Gives Fans A Small Ray Of Hope

A new leak regarding the highly rumored remake of Final Fantasy 9 has been shared, giving fans a small ray of hope in the midst of a lack of official confirmation, though they will still have to be wary about their expectations. It’s been years since the remake has been rumored to be in development by Square Enix, and hope for it has only grown since the massive Nvidia database leak, which featured titles like Resident Evil 4 Remake and Kingdom Hearts 4. On its 25th anniversary in 2025, hopes were high for a Final Fantasy 9 Remake announcement.

However, the year went by, and Square Enix did not make an announcement, apart from sharing celebratory artwork for the game’s anniversary, as well as tons of merch. Even so, it seems like not all hope is lost just yet, as a new leak about the development of the Final Fantasy 9 Remake project has surfaced. As seen in a post made by user healingtwo_ on Reddit, writer Alex Donaldson made a post on Resetera talking about the highly anticipated project, its scope, and its state of development within Square Enix.

According to the writer’s information, the company intended to make the remake a smaller, self-contained project, rather than a multi-part project like the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy. They mention that the project’s development was “very far along,” but that it has fully stalled and is no longer being worked on. There had already been leaks about FF9 Remake being put on ice a few months back, and this leak essentially backs up the previous information.

The exact reason behind it isn’t clear, but it may well have to do with the game’s scope. Recently, game director Yoshi-P acknowledged Final Fantasy 9 Remake without mentioning the title, stating that the company is aware of the fan pleas for remakes of other titles in the series. However, he mentioned that games like Final Fantasy 6, which are huge, stating that “we'd probably end up having to release them in four or maybe even five installments.” It’s unconfirmed, but Square Enix may be reevaluating their approach to the rumored FF9 Remake.

Final Fantasy 9 Fans Will Have To Be Patient

This project is one of the few mentioned in the massive Nvidia leak that has not yet been officially confirmed. It’s still unclear whether Square Enix hit the brakes on it for now or completely discarded the project, but given that its development was “very far along,” it feels like a waste not to take advantage of what has already been made. Of course, even though FF9 is a 10/10 masterpiece 26 years later, a remake would be a great way of revisiting the classic RPG.

A remake would allow the game to have renewed visuals, as well as enhanced gameplay mechanics for modern audiences – it would also serve as an opportunity for a new take on its classic turn-based gameplay, much like how FF7 Remake changed the original. For now, it seems like Final Fantasy 9 Remake is still very much an inactive project, so hope should be managed accordingly, but as a die-hard fan, I know I haven’t completely accepted that it’s no longer coming out someday.
