New Dark Souls Release Arrives in Less Than One Month
A new Dark Souls release is on the horizon. It’s been ten years since FromSoftware released a new Dark Souls game, with that game being Dark Souls III. Since then, FromSoftware and Hidetaka Miyazaki have made spiritual successors, such as Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice and Elden Ring, but nothing Dark Souls-specific. We probably aren’t going to get a Dark Souls IV anytime soon, and we are presumably a while off a potential Dark Souls remake as well.
While Dark Souls hasn’t gotten a proper new game in a decade, FromSoftware hasn’t abandoned the IP entirely. To this end, next month Dark Souls: Mother of Mourning is set to arrive. More specifically, the new release from Titan Comics is arriving on September 22. When it releases, the new graphic novel will cost $17.99 if you want a physical softcover copy. There will be a digital Kindle version available for slightly cheaper than this, priced at $15.99. As for a hardcover release, right now there is no word of one, and no reason to expect one at this point. Meanwhile, for those out of the loop, this is a compilation release that bundles together all four individual volume releases that spanned December 2025 to May 2026.
Mother of Mourning
Mother of Mourning, for those just learning about it, is from George Mann, who has worked on additional media releases for Dark Souls in the past, with art from Maan House. In it, hope is a fleeting feeling for the Knights of Mourning, who have turned to the Mother of Lillies, a soulless, mummified saint who supposedly has the ability to restore balance to the world. The knights believe they can bring her back with her lost soul, and in turn receive a champion to guide them to solace. That said, madness looms in every knight’s mind, and their long-awaited goal may not be what they think it is.
For those interested, user reviews for the four volumes that comprise this new release are scarce, but what there is averages out to 4/5 stars, which is a solid return. To this end, for hardcore fans who can’t get enough of not just the series, but its world and lore, it’s required reading material. For more casual fans, or fans who are only present for gameplay, there probably isn’t going to be much of interest for you.
As for whether or not it is official canon, we do not know. It’s officially licensed, but there is a difference between officially licensed and official canon. That said, FromSoftware has never established what official canon is and what isn’t. In the absence of this information, it’s safe to assume anything that isn’t in the games, unless explicitly said to be canon, is not canon.
