A 1999 PS1 Classic Is Finally Being Revived For Modern Consoles
There are so many incredible PlayStation titles that are trapped on old hardware, relegated to expensive physical copies for a console that already costs a small fortune to acquire in 2026. It's a frustrating reality for those who missed out on the legendary era or those who want to go back to it all these years later. Whether it's different developers and publishers owning the license and doing little with it (like with Xenogears), or simply a game forgotten to time that still deserves a second chance in the spotlight, many of these classic games could be lost forever.
Fortunately, every now and then a once unplayable PlayStation game is restored, and fans get to experience it over two decades later. Of course, it only happens to a lucky few titles, those with dedicated fanbases or those which just so happen to be the favorite of a passionate developer. That is the case with this latest remaster, a title that has lovingly been restored for modern consoles so that long-time fans who lost their old copies and newcomers alike can re-experience its magic.
Every now and then, fans of some of the most underrated PlayStation 1 titles will clamber out of the woodwork and begin lamenting that said games lack a remaster or a straight-up port on modern hardware. While Sony and a number of third party developers do a fairly admirable job of getting as many original PlayStation games onto platforms like PS Plus as they can, there are far too many games for every single one to be ported over, and, thus, some will be left by the wayside.
Luckily, this isn't the case for Croc 2, one of the best PlayStation 1 platformers and a sequel that has very much been in need of a remaster. The first game in the series, Croc: Legend of the Gobbos, was remastered last year by developer Argonaut Games to great success. Fans of the series were delighted to see the beloved and slightly underrated platformer be brought into the modern era, and newcomers got a chance to see what all the fuss was about. It also meant that the series was finally released on platforms beyond PlayStation and PC.
Retitled Croc 2: Kingdom of the Gobbos, this remaster updates the game's visuals, gives Croc a triple-jump, throws in some much-needed quality-of-life improvements (the original Croc 2 was criticized for its awkward camera), and brings back the digital museum featuring behind scenes details of the game's development from the first remaster, this time called Croc2pedia.
Regardless of whether you're a Croc fan or not, it is great to see PlayStation classics get remastered in 2026 and brought over to even more platforms than before. Croc 2 was a PlayStation exclusive before eventually being ported to PC, so it is great to see it pop up on the Nintendo Switch and Xbox Series X/S today. Unfortunately, this PlayStation 1 remaster doesn't have a release date as of yet, but Argonaut Games is sure to announce more soon, so prospective fans should keep their eyes peeled.
