ModRetro's M64: Nintendo 64-Compatible Console Launches

You Can Now Play Original Nintendo 64 Games On ModRetro's M64 Console

"Crush your kids' dreams on Rainbow Road. Launch your spouse into space in Smash Bros."

ModRetro makes FPGA-based retro consoles that work with original game cartridges and aim to recreate the classic gaming experience as closely as possible. The company previously launched Chromatic, a handheld console that plays Game Boy and Game Boy Color cartridges.

M64 is a Nintendo 64-compatible console that has been in the works for months and is now officially available to buy. It starts at $229 and comes in four different colors. Even though both devices are built to mimic Nintendo's hardware, Nintendo hasn't taken any legal action against ModRetro.

The company says the M64 is built to play your favorite original Nintendo 64 cartridges with high accuracy, while adding modern upgrades like HDMI output up to 4K and customization features like CRT filters and overclocking modes.

It's not just an N64 replica, though. The system's core and firmware are open-source, the hardware is designed to be easy to mod, and wireless updates will also let ModRetro add new improvements and features over time. ModRetro plans to release dozens of new cartridge games, complete with physical boxes and printed manuals. According to the product page, "Our publishing team is directly funding solo indie developers on new IPs, and partnering with larger studios to remaster and re-release old classics."

The M64 order comes with the console, a pre-installed 16GB SD card, a multi-region power adapter, and a power cable. Controllers aren't included, but they can be purchased separately from ModRetro.

The console has a compatibility list on its website, and currently 276 games are listed as having "no issues". If you're looking for a more authentic retro feel, a CRT adapter is also available for preorder.
