Aliens: Fireteam Elite Now Unplayable On Switch, Even If You Paid $60 For It

There’s a microscope on digital games right now as PlayStation has opened the door to the death of physical games and refuses to close it. That’s why the shutdown of Aliens: Fireteam Elite’s cloud servers on Switch is causing more uproar than it might have if we weren’t staring down the barrel of a future where this could happen to all games at a moment’s notice.

Aliens: Fireteam Elite No Longer Functions On Nintendo Switch

Fire Team Elite developer Iron Studios delisted the game from the Switch eShop earlier this year, quietly informing players that, on August 5, 2026, its servers would be taken offline. That date has now been and gone, and not only does that mean you can no longer play the game’s online modes on Switch, since it was a Cloud version of the game, it means you can’t even play it alone offline.

Just to make sure the situation here is clear to everyone, this isn’t a case of those who previously bought the game being able to play and redownload it whenever they like. Even those who own the game have now had their access revoked. Whether it was the standard $29.99 edition or the $59.99 ultimate edition that included all of the DLC, Fireteam Elite can no longer be played on Switch. The game remains playable on other platforms, since those other versions don’t rely on Cloud servers for the game to function.

Nintendo's Cloud Gaming On Switch Initiative Is Becoming A Bit Of A Problem

It’s Nintendo’s decision to bring some more demanding third-party games to the original Switch via Cloud gaming that’s being hit hardest as the end of physical games as we know them looms. Fireteam Elite has suffered the same fate as the Cloud versions of the Kingdom Hearts games. A new Kingdom Hearts Collection is launching this year that will run natively on Switch 2. That prompted Square Enix to announce server shutdown plans for the cloud versions of its KH games on Switch. If you paid money for those games, tough, I guess.

You can get the Switch 2 collection for a discount if you owned the Cloud versions on Switch, but it is far from a free upgrade, which means you are still effectively paying again for games you already bought.

The timing of Fireteam Elite’s Cloud server shutdown is a little suspect, as it comes just weeks before the sequel’s release on August 25. Aliens: Fireteam Elite 2 won’t launch on Switch 2 until the fall; however, that reveal was made during the same week as support for the first game on Switch came to an end.
