George R.R. Martin Meets Berserk In 10/10 Dark Fantasy RPG Releasing August 28
A new 10/10 dark fantasy RPG that mixes elements from George R.R. Martin’s work and Kentaro Miura’s Berserk is set to arrive on August 28, and you may want to get ready for its release. Both authors have been highly influential in fantasy fiction. The first wrote the novels that led to the creation of Game of Thrones, which needs no introduction. Miura’s manga, on the other hand, was influential on many other works. Berserk heavily influenced Dark Souls, and without Guts, the Dark Knight class from Final Fantasy would likely not exist in the way that it does today.
Now, a game that has been inspired by both of their works is scheduled for release in late August. As was reported in a post on the official Nintendo website, a new dark fantasy RPG is arriving for the Nintendo Switch 2 later this month in its complete edition, containing both the base game and its only DLC, which significantly expands the playtime you’ll get from it. This is not a completely new release, but it’s the first time it will be playable in this way on Nintendo’s current-gen consoles.
The game in question is Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition. The original game was released back in 2022 to critical acclaim. The action-based dark fantasy RPG set in the Lands Between was created by developer FromSoftware in direct collaboration with George R.R. Martin. George R.R. Martin’s influence on Elden Ring is huge, as he is reported to have written the whole backstory for the game’s world. The clash and downfall of the gods and the family matters between these deities became a reality because of the popular fantasy author.
Of course, he did not do this entirely alone, as he was working alongside game director Hidetaka Miyazaki. Time and time again, Miyazaki has been inspired by Kentaro Miura’s Berserk, and in Elden Ring, this was no different. There are several connections between Berserk and Elden Ring, from echoes of characters like Radahn and weapons that seem to come out of Berserk’s arsenal, down to the Erdtree being a nod to the World Spiral Tree. Of course, Elden Ring makes every aspect of itself its own, but there are undeniable references.
Perhaps one of the biggest similarities between Berserk and Elden Ring is how its world functions. Contrary to the Dark Souls series, where the Chosen Undead or Ashen One explores what can be described as a fully post-apocalyptic world, the Lands Between seems to be full of life, even if corrupted in different ways. The general vibe you get from Elden Ring’s world is the same as you get from Berserk’s world – a colorful and living world that’s full of horrors.
Now, you’ll get to experience all that on your Nintendo Switch 2. Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition is available for pre-order on the Nintendo eShop right now. Regardless of whether you’ve played it before or not, this dark fantasy RPG with Berserk vibes and George R.R. Martin’s influence is worth diving into for hundreds of hours.
