Red Dead Redemption 3 Can Wait, RDR2: The Forgotten Frontier Is Coming

Arthur Morgan RDR2

Red Dead Redemption 2 brought us one of the greatest game worlds of all time. While it didn't have as much going on as a game like Skyrim, its realistic, beautiful depiction of the dying days of the Wild West gave players hundreds of hours of exploration and some of the most beautiful vistas in any release to date.

A big part of that are all the towns, settlements, and points of interest that crop up as you go, but there was one notable absence. Mexico plays a major role in the first game, but it's conspicuously absent in the prequel, and that really does feel like one of the few missed opportunities for the release as a whole.

Happily, there's a team out there who plan to change all that, and the project is up and running once again in a big way.

Sadie Adler RDR2

Over on the Nexus Mods website, you should be able to find the download page for Nuevo Paraiso, an ambitious mod that aims to take the player back to Mexico for the first time in Red Dead Redemption 2. Sadie Adler serves as the playable protagonist this time around as well, with this serving as a prequel in which she visited Mexico before heading to South America.

It's a very cool premise, and it's actually quite far along, with development resuming last November after a significant break. In sharing what they're up to and what fans can expect from the download, the developer shared the following insight:

  • Texturing work has been restarted across all the towns and peds.
  • Almost all of the towns and his models have been redesigned from scratch to achieve a more realistic and decent style for not having AMV's or MLO's.
  • The goal now is clear: that Mexico not be will be just a stage, will be a living country.

More than just atmosphere: Identity and Lore Context.

We're working to ensure the mod not only looks good, but also feels real. We want to reflect the oppression, despair, and social tension experienced by many Mexicans during that year. Not as mere decoration, but as environmental storytelling, so the players will understands why the Revolution began, and how that conflict gives meaning to the events of Red Dead Redemption 1.

There's no word yet on when players can expect a full release of the mod, but the images that have been made available so far look very impressive. It's also probably our best bet since Red Dead Redemption 3 is probably years away, with all of Rockstar's near-unlimited attention focused on GTA VI.
