God Of War Casting Strongly Suggests We're Headed For Ragnarok In Season Two

Production on the God of War show has hit a bit of a rough patch. Ryan Hurst, who was supposed to play Kratos, has been removed from the role after tearing his bicep. Work continues, however, and even though filming has halted on season one, Amazon is already casting some of its bigger roles in season two.

Amazon Is Looking For Aged-Up Atreus And Thrud

Spotted by MP1st, Amazon has put out a casting call for teen versions of Atreus and Thrud, both of whom will appear in season two of the show. The roles are listed as Teen Joshua and Teen Ruth; Joshua and Ruth were the codenames used by Amazon when casting child versions of Atreus and Thrud for season one.

“After growing up in isolation in a cabin in the woods, Joshua went on a daring and dangerous adventure alongside his father that bonded the two of them but threw everything into question,” Atreus’s role description reads. Meanwhile, Thrud’s description begins with, “Because of an incident that changed the course of her life, Ruth is wise beyond her years.”

Atreus and Thrud’s role descriptions not only confirm that there will be a time jump between seasons one and two, but that the second season will dive straight into the events of God of War Ragnarok, the second game in the Norse branch of the series. It sounds very much like Amazon will pull inspiration from HBO’s The Last of Us, telling the story of the first game in a single season.

Also like The Last of Us’s adaptation, we will seemingly get a few creative tweaks here and there. We don’t see a younger version of Thrud in the first game, for example, nor her father, Thor, who doesn’t become an issue for Kratos until Ragnarok. However, barring a big shift, we will be introduced to both of those characters in season one.

The God Of War Show Still Needs A New Kratos

There may well still be a shift due to the Kratos-sized spanner thrown in the works. Hurst hadn’t only been cast as Kratos, but filming on multiple episodes had wrapped. Those episodes will need to be re-shot, not only because you can’t just switch to a new Kratos midway through the season, but also because Callum Vinson, who will play young Atreus in season one, will have potentially visibly aged in the time it takes to find a new lead due to how young he is.

Even if it takes a little longer than expected for the God of War adaptation to get here, it’s still a great time to be a fan of the series. A remake of the original trilogy is coming, God of War Laufey will be released in February 2027, and Santa Monica has now confirmed that Kratos will return in the follow-up to the Faye-led game.
