Rockstar Reveals What GTA 6 Mods Won't Be Allowed to Do
The company has introduced new modding guidelines for its games, covering story content, monetization, and more.
As the highly anticipated release of Grand Theft Auto 6 approaches, Rockstar has released new guidelines outlining what modders can and cannot do with its games.
Under the newly revealed rules, Rockstar prohibits modifying or expanding its games' official storylines, plots, missions, characters, and other content. Mods also cannot combine maps, locations, characters, storylines, in-game assets, or other IP from one Rockstar Games title with another. Mixing Rockstar Games content with other IPs is also prohibited. The same applies to abusive, sensitive, or harassing content. Unofficial multiplayer modding is also not allowed, nor is bringing Rockstar Games titles to platforms where they were not officially released.
Rockstar also states that mods must be non-commercial unless they are authorized through Rockstar Games' official Creator Platform. The company also prohibits chance-based mechanics involving real money, the sale or exchange of in-game virtual currency for real money, and the use or promotion of cryptocurrency or other crypto assets.
Earlier, Rockstar acquired the Cfx.re team, which supports large roleplay communities around GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2. Taken together, the new guidelines put clear boundaries around how Rockstar's games can be modified, shared, and monetized. Although they apply to the company's games generally, including Red Dead Redemption, Bully, and the previous GTA titles, the rules are particularly notable ahead of GTA 6's release.
