Avengers: Doomsday's new trailer has confirmed a design detail for Doctor Doom that can prove surprising for those who are aware of the MCU character's casting and setup in the franchise thus far. It's been quite some time since we first learned that Robert Downey Jr. would be playing the role of Fantastic Four nemesis Doctor Doom in the next Avengers movie, which would go from being Avengers: The Kang Dynasty to Avengers: Doomsday, but many of the biggest questions that were first raised then remain at large.
Indeed, much of the hype for Avengers: Doomsday revolves around how the movie and the MCU timeline more broadly speaking will handle this rendition of Doctor Doom, as well as how the next era for the Avengers themselves will take shape, given the team folded following Avengers: Endgame itself a number of in-universe and real world years ago.
Thankfully, the newest trailer for Avengers: Doomsday has shed a little more light on all of these matters, and meant that we have a much stronger idea of how Doctor Doom will factor into the film following the relatively sparse setup the character himself has had thus far. Interestingly, this includes a detail that audiences have been debating about since day one when it comes to the MCU's rendition of Doctor Doom.
Avengers: Doomsday's New Trailer Confirms The MCU Movie Will Avoid Showing RDJ's Face As Doctor Doom For Even Longer
The new trailer for Avengers: Doomsday has revealed some of our first proper glances at what the character will look like and act like in the upcoming 2026 movie - including a particularly interesting shot of Doom and Thor facing off against one another.
With Robert Downey Jr's Doctor Doom casting being one of the most discussed aspects of Avengers: Doomsday ever since it was first announced, this is exciting all by itself. However, it's even more intriguing because these glimpses show the focus is on depicting Doctor Doom with his mask on, rather than having Robert Downey Jr's face on display to capitalize throughout on his prominence in the MCU previously as the franchise's Iron Man casting.
The Fantastic Four: First Steps had previously teased this might be the scenario, since its post-credit scene showing Doom for the first time also avoided showing the character's face - though it also seemed possible the film was saving this for Avengers: Doomsday, wherein characters who knew the main universe's Tony Stark would be able to react to a character who could visually resemble him.
Now, though, it seems The Fantastic Four: First Steps' post-credits tease was simply showing the MCU's intention for the time being, as - unless the new Doomsday trailer cherry-picked the moments wherein Doom keeps his mask on - it seems Doctor Doom is set to keep his more comic accurate overall look and thus keep the mask on for the foreseeable future.
Why Avengers: Doomsday Is Avoiding Showing Doctor Doom's Face (For Now)
Given Doctor Doom is synonymous with his mask, it makes sense the MCU hasn't given up on this aspect of the iconic Marvel villain (and sometimes antihero) this early into his appearance in the franchise. Indeed, this seems to some degree to be a way for the franchise - and for Avengers: Doomsday specifically - to be able to visually promise that it's holding to the source material in terms of its depiction of Doom overall.
That said, it would also make a lot of sense if the MCU is still intending to show what Robert Downey Jr. looks like as Doctor Doom beneath the mask, particularly since The Fantastic Four: First Steps shows the character with his mask removed and in his hand, but with his head turned away to obscure his face, suggesting he's not opposed to removing it when the occasion requires, and that it's not fused to his face as some iterations of Doom have experienced.
Given so many major MCU characters would have major reactions to a version of Doom who reassembled Tony Stark even slightly - and that there's still tons of drama that can come from a mask reveal even if it's not used for this purpose, as the comics have proved time and time again - it wouldn't be surprising if a mask reveal was being saved for later in Avengers: Doomsday or even in Avengers: Secret Wars, though only time will tell whether the MCU does indeed take this tack in the Multiverse Saga's final chapters.
