Microsoft has just announced that an advertisement-supported cloud gaming tier is on the way for its Xbox platform. The way it's structured right now, this will let players jump into any game they own without payment, but there is a big restriction alongside ad viewing.

Microsoft says that anyone with an Xbox account will be able to use this feature using whatever device they may already own. When starting up, an ad will play before the session actually begins, so players don't need to worry about any mid-game interrupting their playtime. However, there is a one-hour time limit on their free session.

With the rising cost of hardware, Microsoft is angling this as another way players can utilize the devices they own to jump into games.

"For many players, the device they already own now allows them to stream games with XBOX. Cloud can also help XBOX One owners play newer games built for XBOX Series X|S without needing to purchase new hardware right away," said the company today. "That can be especially meaningful in places where consoles are harder to find or less affordable, giving more players another way to access great games on devices they already have."

Microsoft went on to say that when advertising is done right, it can "help lower the cost of access," calling this another method of accessing their games. It outlined the following as how ads on Xbox will be approached:

  • We start with the player. Ads should create value.
  • We do not interrupt the flow of gameplay.
  • We hold ads to the same quality bar as our content.
  • We’re clear about what’s advertising.
  • We make sure ads fit what players expect on each platform.

This Xbox Insider update is rolling out to members of the program starting today. As usual, Microsoft aims to bring it to more Insiders over time before they reach all Xbox owners.
