Batman Writer Reveals Iconic Villain’s Codename Was A Total Accident
Of Batman’s recycled rogues’ gallery villains, few have cut through to Bruce Wayne’s nougaty center as surgically as Dr. Thomas Elliot’s Hush, whose talents with a scalpel earned him a ton of praise in his eponymous, debut storyline in 2002–2003. Batman: Hush has had some intriguing and entertaining development stories, such as Batman’s physique being tweaked and retconned along the way, but even Batman: Hush’s villain was not originally planned to have the name ‘Hush,’ as revealed at San Diego Comic-Con 2026.
Hush isn’t the most recurring villain of Batman’s bunch, but it’s great to see that there are plenty more layers to peel away and more to learn about the character 23 years later, whether in the sequel series Batman: H2SH, or from Batman: Hush itself. If you’ve ever been curious how Hush got the name ‘Hush,’ the answer was recently revealed by the writer of Batman: Hush himself.
At SDCC 2026, the hotbed for all ceremonious DC reveals this last week, acclaimed Batman creatives Jeph Loeb and Jim Lee had a panel where they discussed Batman: H2SH, including the fortuitous and unplanned origins of Elliot’s supervillain name. Apparently, ‘Hush’ was born of pure happenstance, as they had written “HUSH” on a board as a clandestine placeholder while attempting to keep their story secret from DC, as per CBR. Of this, Loeb remarked:
“It wasn’t really until about the fourth or fifth issue when Jim called and goes, ‘Does this character have a name? Like, I really need to tell somebody.’ And, I was looking at the board and I went, ‘I think we already named him.’ And that’s how Hush became Hush, because we had to put something on the board.”
It’s amusing to hear that Loeb and Lee hadn’t even considered or devised a name for Hush until four or five issues into Batman: Hush’s celebrated and seminal story. It obviously stuck, and the rest is history.
It’s fun to imagine what Hush might’ve been named if Loeb and Lee had given themselves ample time to brainstorm, especially considering how niche and specific Tommy’s skillset and motivations are as a supervillain, but they did arguably land on the best name possible for Hush due to its simplicity and ominousness. Hush might not be as iconic a name as Joker, Scarecrow, Poison Ivy, Mister Freeze, or Riddler, but it has a uniqueness that is rare for a Batman villain to have a name that isn’t ridiculously on-the-nose, and that plays a big role in why it’s so special.
Batman: H2SH Vol. 1 is scheduled to be released on September 19, 2026.
