Nearly Ten Years Later, This Where's Waldo-Style Browser Game Is Huge

Floor796, a solo project by 0x00, is definitely not a new thing: it's been in the works since 2018. If you've never seen it before, it's basically a gigantic animated pixel-art GIF packed with references to video games, movies, TV shows, anime, and memes, all crammed into the 796th floor of a fictional space station. Even the name has a little joke hidden in it: 7, 9, and 6 are the positions of the letters G, I, and F in the alphabet, spelling "GIF."

You can click on the characters to find out who they are. It's kind of a crossover straight out of a fever dream: Boney M, Naruto, Pyramid Head, the Stoned Fox, Hatsune Miku, Marilyn Monroe, Robbie Rotten, Batman, Pennywise, all hanging out together. There's also a ton of stuff to discover by clicking around, including easter eggs, games, quests, and other interactive bits, for example, you can actually try to find Wally/Waldo, compose a 10-second melody, draw your own advertising screen, and more.

To build Floor796, 0x00 created his own animation editor. We actually spoke with 0x00 back in 2021 about the project and how he makes it all work, check out the interview here.

Floor796 is still only about 62% complete, with new characters and rooms being added regularly. The first block took more than eight months to finish, and these days, 0x00 can complete a new block in roughly 1-1.5 months.
