Warner Bros. adapted the novels into an eight-part blockbuster franchise with the first release in 2001. The movies launched the careers of some and took over the world; the franchise now has a rough net worth of $25 billion. So, it's no surprise HBO wanted to adapt the fantasy series.

Outstanding, Exceeds Expectations, or Troll?

In an interview with Andre Pilli, Director of Photography for HBO's upcoming Harry Potter adaptation, Adriano Goldman spoke about the new series and dove into some extra details that haven't been revealed before. Goldman, known for Andor, The Crown, and Jane Eyre, discussed the "brutal" filming conditions for the crew and its young cast:

"You have to shoot really fast, and the faster you go, the more you compromise quality. There’s no way around it, right? Obviously, we have a lot of resources, but it’s brutal. The kids’ screen time is really brutal. So the methodology is very specific. You practically have to pre-shoot all the scenes while they’re in class.

Then they come to the set, stay for an hour and a half, and you have to shoot six setups because they’re leaving again—and then they’ll come back in the afternoon. It’s really hard; you shoot everything out of order, right, because of that kind of scheduling. So the process is really complicated, but I’ve done one now."

The original eight movies also used a young cast for their franchise, with Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint leading the charge. It was reported the original Harry Potter cast also had to find a way to balance strict filming schedules with on-set education and lean on the older cast members for mentorship and guidance due to the sudden rise to fame. An interesting detail is that to make the classrooms look authentic, the crew had the actors do their real-life work whilst in costume.

Watson has previously stated how she wanted to quit at one point due to the feeling of being overworked, isolated, and missing a normal teenage life. However, she did stay until the final movie alongside her other cast members.

Dominic McLaughlin, Alastair Stout, and Arabella Stanton are portraying the iconic trio from the Harry Potter franchise, and have had little to no experience, especially of this magnitude. Original cast members such as Radcliffe, Grint, and Tom Felton have reportedly reached out to the new young stars to offer mentorship and advice as they take on arguably the most recognizable IP.

HBO's Harry Potter series will arrive on December 25.
