Final Fantasy 7 Revelation vs Remake and Rebirth: PS5 graphics modes compared

Final Fantasy 7 Revelation is set to be the biggest game in the series that Square Enix has developed so far, raising questions about how the performance on PC and consoles will be.
While we don’t know about exact performance on variable hardware such as PCs, the graphical modes and performance metrics for Final Fantasy 7 Revelation on PS5 Pro have now been confirmed.
In his preview of Final Fantasy 7 Revelation at Tokyo Game Show, Game Informer’s Wesley LaBlanc noticed the various performance modes the final game will have at launch on PS5 Pro.
According to LaBlanc, Final Fantasy 7 Revelation on PS5 Pro will have three graphical modes: Quality, Performance – Sharp, and Performance – Soft.
What these modes do is pretty self-explanatory if you’re familiar with how they work on modern consoles, especially as they also appeared in the previous games in the trilogy.
For starters, Quality Mode will likely run the game at the highest resolution possible; in this case, it’d be 4K, while also locking the game to 30 FPS.
Meanwhile, Performance – Sharp and Performance – Soft are graphical modes that were added post-launch to Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth for players who want to experience 60 FPS. Both modes feature the higher framerate, but Smooth has a softer image quality while Sharp is more detailed.
Resolution targets for these modes are unconfirmed, but Smooth will likely target a lower resolution and use PSSR to upscale to 4K, while Sharp will go less heavy on the upscaling but target a lower resolution as a result.
Final Fantasy 7 Revelation graphics modes compared to Remake and Rebirth
Comparing this to Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, the results are likely to be similar.
Starting with Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade, which originally launched on PlayStation 5, current-gen consoles offer two modes: Graphics Mode and Performance. Graphics Mode gives players the option to play in 4K30, while Performance lowers the dynamic resolution to around 1440p, but ups the framerate to 60 FPS.
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth improved this with three graphical modes: Graphics, Performance – Sharp, and Performance – Smooth. Just like Remake, the Graphics Mode features 4K30 visuals for those who want the crispest picture at the cost of performance.
Both Performance modes changed the visual quality slightly in favour of getting a smooth 60 FPS out of it. Performance – Smooth is the one you want if you want the best frames, but the upscaling makes everything look very blurry and undetailed. Meanwhile, Performance – Sharp addresses these issues but reduces the anti-aliasing, which can make everything feel a little less jagged.
At the end of the day, your chosen graphical mode will come down to personal preference. If you want the best visuals possible and don’t mind a lower framerate, go for Quality.
If you still want a great picture but absolutely have to have 60 FPS, Performance – Sharp is your best bet. And if you want an uncompromised smooth performance and don’t care if you have the worst visuals, then Performance – Smooth is your best bet.
However, given that Final Fantasy 7 Revelation is set to be the biggest game in the series by far, it's possible that Square Enix may have to compromise even further on more details in order to get it running smoothly on current-gen hardware, especially Nintendo Switch 2.
Final Fantasy 7 Revelation is out on April 8, 2027 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2.
