Everyone Forgets Sylar's Superpower In Heroes Is NOT Absorbing Other Powers

While a lot of viewers might misremember Sylar’s powers in Heroes, his actual abilities were even more awesome and unsettling than pop culture lore dictates. Shortly before the MCU began with Iron Man’s release in 2008, Heroes proved that the American viewing public was ready to start its superhero obsession. Decades later, after the success of Prime Video’s The Boys and the gritty, subversive superhero deconstruction Invincible, it is tough to imagine a time when a show about superheroes was inherently novel.

However, Heroes undeniably was a novel series, and not just because its astounding cast included a range of emerging stars like Hayden Panettiere, Santiago Cabrera, Masi Oka, Sendhil Ramamurthy, Milo Ventimiglia, and Noah Gray-Cabey. The show’s ingenious premise saw its main characters discover that they each had unique superpowers, prompting them to work together to stop the show’s nefarious overarching villain, Zachary Quinto’s Sylar, from draining them of their abilities.

At least, that is how most restrospective rundowns of the show’s premise recount its plot. In reality, Sylar’s power was not quite as straightforward as it seemed. Years before Quinto took over the role of Star Trek franchise’s iconic Spock, he portrayed the chilling Sylar, and the Heroes antagonist displayed a wide variety of powers he had seemingly “stolen” from other superheroes. However, as Chandra later explained, Sylar’s actual ability was a preternatural understanding of how things worked.

Sylar's Real Power In Heroes Explained

The son of a horologist, Sylar displayed an unerring aptitude for understanding complex systems from an early age. However, with his intelligence came a thirst for knowledge and the power it would bring, and this eventually resulted in Sylar opening up the brains of other people with powers so he could learn how to use those abilities for his own ends. By the time the first display of his powers appears onscreen, Sylar had already acquired telekinesis, enhanced memory, precognition, and energy projection.

As the show continued, Sylar picked up new powers despite the Company’s attempts to curtail him, eventually even gaining the Heroes heroine Claire’s ability to regenerate in the season 3 premiere. That was the same outing that finally addressed how, exactly, Sylar gained knowledge from the brains of other heroes, with Panettiere’s immortal cheerleader bluntly asking the serial killer if he ate part of her brain.

Even though this was a popular fan theory, Sylar replied with pithy disgust, proving that this evidently wasn’t how he extracted abilities from the brains of other heroes. It remains unclear exactly how he went about extracting their knowledge, but the important canon clarification was that Sylar wasn’t simply absorbing their powers through osmosis, but rather learning how to mimic their abilities himself.

This makes Sylar a uniquely dangerous and powerful villain even within the world of comics and superheroes. While absorbing other powers alone would be impressive, Sylar’s ability to see how any mechanical or biological process works functions like a reality cheat code, allowing him to do everything from shrug off life-ending injuries to gain abiltiies like shape-shifting, teleporting, and flight throughout the show’s run. The show utilized this to full effect throughout its story, with Sylar remaining its big-picture villain for most of its run.

By the very end of the entire Heroes saga, Sylar does become a hero despite his years as a monstrous villain. Although he cycles through countless powers in his search for ultimate knowledge, it is eventually the ability to empathize with others that leads Sylar to stop killing others for their powers and embrace his good side. In the process, he becomes arguably the most powerful Heroes character, and one of the most powerful characters in superhero media in general.
