Ghost Recon 25th anniversary brings a free game and updates about future
The classic Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon series of games under Ubisoft is turning 25, and Ubisoft celebrated the occasion with several big announcements today. This included a big update drop for a popular installment, an insider program for the next entry, and even a giveaway on PC.
Starting off with the update, the 2017-released Ghost Recon Wildlands just received a brand-new mission dubbed Last Rites. Available for free across console and PC, this is described as a standalone mission set in a "darker, more oppressive Bolivia."
"The Ghosts enter a region controlled by Los Penitentes, a fanatical cult united by faith, sacrifice, and violent justice," says Ubisoft, describing the free mission. "Players must hunt down La Llorona, the cult leader, by navigating dangerous swamps and dense forests where visibility is low and danger is lurking."
At the same time, this update has upgraded the Wildlands visuals and frame rates too, adding a 4K 60 FPS option on current-generation consoles. Across all platforms, more customization options for tweaking the difficulty, UI elements, enemy behavior, weapon restrictions, weather, friendly fire, and much more are included here as well. Even the hit Predator event is back for players to jump into if they want to take on the alien combatant again.
“Ghost Recon wouldn’t be where it is today without the passion, dedication, and feedback of its community over the past 25 years,” said Olivier Leonardi, Creative Director. “With Last Rites, we wanted to create an experience that honors that legacy—something that feels authentic to longtime Ghosts, celebrates what makes this franchise special, and reflects our appreciation for the players who have been with us every step of the way.”
Next, the company announced that it has been building the next Ghost Recon game for a few years now and that it wants player feedback before it's ready for primetime. For this, Ubisoft is kicking off a Ghost Recon Insider Program.
Almost no information about the game's setting, gameplay features, or release schedule has been released yet. There isn't a guarantee for gaining access to the Insider Program either, but fans should jump in early to grab a seat.
Lastly, Ubisoft is giving away Ghost Recon: Future Soldier. The classic experience is free for PC players to claim until August 13 via the Ubisoft Connect launcher. The 2012-released title takes players into a futuristic setting to take on threats across the world.
