The Coldest Quote In Star Trek’s Most Divisive Show Is Proven True In Its Final Season
It looks like the coldest quote in Star Trek: Starfleet Academy season 1 will be proven true in its second and final season. Star Trek: Starfleet Academy was canceled by Paramount+ soon after season 1's finale premiered on the streamer. With all 10 episodes already filmed and wrapped, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy season 2 is expected to premiere next year on Paramount+.
Star Trek: Starfleet Academy brilliantly balanced its ensemble cast of young cadets with its adult instructors led by the Academy's Chancellor, Captain Nahla Ake (Holly Hunter). Yet much of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy season 1 centered on Caleb Mir (Sandro Rosta), the troubled young recruit who rebelled against Captain Ake and her San Francisco-based school.
Caleb was a genius who had no issues with Starfleet Academy's academics whenever he applied himself, but he was burdened by emotional turmoil as he searched for his mother, Anisha Mir (Tatiana Maslany). Meanwhile, Caleb falls for Tarima Sadal (Zoë Steiner), the beautiful Betazoid cadet with issues of her own. Tarima didn't need her psychic powers to blast through Caleb's walls.
Starfleet Academy Adding A New Rebel Proves Season 1’s Coldest Quote Right
Tarima's assessment of Caleb in episode 8, "The Life of the Stars," turned out to be Star Trek: Starfleet Academy's coldest line, which is saying something considering villain Nus Braka's (Paul Giamatti) stinging dialogue. Struggling after her near-death experience and medicating with alcohol, Tarima was angered when Caleb rebuffed her sexual overtures, and she burned him with this line:
"Why don't you go find Genesis, now that you're a good little Academy boy?"
When Caleb and Tarima had their meet-cute in Star Trek: Starfleet Academy episode 2, Mir was literally on the fence trying to quit the school. Caleb spent much of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy season 1 arriving late to class, copping an attitude, and causing chaos, while also showing flashes of being a brilliant future Starfleet Officer.
In Star Trek: Starfleet Academy episode 8, however, Tarima called Caleb out about how much he's changed. He warmed up to the Academy, found purpose, friendship, and direction, although he refused to fully accept it until he found his missing mother. Caleb and Genesis Lythe (Bella Shephard) also formed an attraction and rapport, which didn't escape Tarima's Betazoid abilities.
Star Trek: Starfleet Academy season 2 is adding a new cadet, Keats, played by Ruaridh Aldington. An alien with a rap sheet and a mysterious backstory, Keats echoes Caleb when Mir first joined Starfleet Academy. Keats coming aboard the USS Athena essentially replaces Caleb as the class rebel, confirming that Mir really has transformed into "a good little Academy boy."
Starfleet Academy's New Cadet Is A Smart Season 2 Addition
Given the size of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy's cast, and how well the young crew has gelled as a unit, season 2 introducing a new cadet is a surprise. However, Keats is a savvy addition, as the mysterious alien looks to be a disruptive influence, filling Caleb's old role in the group.
Keats could be a welcome rival to Caleb in ways that Darem Reymi (George Hawkins) forfeited as he and Mir found common ground and gained respect for each other in Star Trek: Starfleet Academy season 1. Keats could also be a potential love interest for Genesis, as Lythe was noticeably lacking a romance in season 1.
Alternatively, Keats could potentially break up Caleb and Tarima, creating a love triangle and new challenges to their relationship. Keats also becomes a new problem child for Captain Ake, now that Caleb has fully embraced Starfleet Academy. Keats provides an unstable element and an air of danger that Starfleet Academy needs in their sophomore year.
Sadly, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy's next 10 episodes will be its last, and Keats especially gets short-changed by coming aboard and only getting one year at school. Maybe Keats will provoke Caleb Mir to shed his "good little Academy boy" persona and go back to being a bad boy in Star Trek: Starfleet Academy season 2.
