PlayStation Plus October line-up confirms first free game, and it's a day one release

Yet another day one release is coming to PlayStation Plus’ extra tier catalogue, and it’s confirmed its October launch date.

There’s still a short while to go until PlayStation reveals its essential tier free game line-up for October, which is due on Wednesday, September 30.

The extra and premium tier line-up will drop several weeks after that on Wednesday, October 14.

Already though, it’s been revealed that Mycopunk will be included within that line-up.

Mycopunk’s arrival on PlayStation Plus was confirmed at a State of Play earlier this year, although no precise launch date had yet been announced.

This co-op looter shooter has been available in early access on PC since July of last year, but on October 20, it’ll depart early access on PC while also making its way to PS5 for the first time.

Again, the game is coming to the extra tier so while it’ll likely stick around for at least six months, you should never hesitate too long if there’s something on that tier that you’d like to play.

Developed by Pigeons at Play and published by Devolver Digital, Mycopunk is about “a ragtag group of robot rejects” which is hired by the SAXON corporation and given “one last shot at profitable glory”.

Known as the Atlas Hazard Crew, your job is to patrol alien planets, fighting back against the spread of a particular fungus.

“Embark on a series of dangerous planet-side missions to drive back the mycological menace,” developers tease.

“Could this be a simple natural disaster like they claim? And did SAXON really misfile your taxes? Or was that your own fault?”

Mycopunk has been compared to Helldivers II and Borderlands by players

The high-octane shooter is played from a first-person perspective.

There’s, by all accounts, “an outrageous arsenal of advanced futuristic weaponry”, with weapons able to be supercharged by a “one-of-a-kind grid-based upgrade system”.

Mycopunk feels like pure chaos, but in a way that’s really going to resonate with those who enjoy the looter shooter genre.

You’ll face off against hordes of enemies as they attempt to weaponise the planet’s technology against you.

Between missions, you can upgrade your gear and hang out at the Roach Motel, an orbital dropship “packed with toys and games”.

Here, you can simply hang out with your pals, uncover more about this world’s law, or just chat with owner of the base Roachard Cox.

Clearly, Mycopunk’s early access period has been a major success as the game currently boasts a ‘Very Positive’ review score of 91% on Steam.

“This game is an underrated gem! It's influenced by so many great games: Borderlands, Destiny, Helldivers etc... It doesn't care to look the flashiest. Pigeons at Play truly put the gameplay above all else,” wrote one happy player.

“Holy grail of movement, does Borderlands better than BL4, has more replayability than RoR and has Helldivers 2/Deep Rock Galactic co-operation,” added another.

It’ll be interesting to see whether the PlayStation audience warms to Mycopunk as much as the PC audience clearly has, but I can’t see any cause for concern.

Mycopunk will be the third day one launch on PlayStation this year, following in the footsteps of Big Walk and Runescape: Dragonwilds.

Big Walk is perhaps the biggest success of the year, being a GOTY contender but all day one launches have so far delivered on the most important quality of being fun.
