MTG Podcast Struck Gold With "Off The Record" Episode

Storytelling comes in many forms throughout Magic: The Gathering, but one of the most recent additions is the Magic Story Podcast. It’s used as an audio vehicle to feed players lore about in-universe sets, especially those who love to know the ins and outs of each plane we visit.

Following the end of the Lorwyn Eclipsed story, which ended on the cliffhanger of white Liliana showing up, players were left with nothing but silence until March 9, 2026, when Off The Record dropped and the community collectively lost its mind.

Despite the popularity of the Strixhaven plane and general hype for Reality Fracture, the release of this one-off podcast was actually viewed as somewhat of an unknown quantity within Wizards of the Coast, and that’s why there was no build-up to what has become one of the most memorable lore moments in the current Magic story arc.

Podcast Talk With Natalie Kreider & Harless Snyder

During MagicCon Amsterdam 2026, I had the pleasure of interviewing the hosts of the Magic Story Podcast: Natalie Kreider and Harless Snyder. Both hold other roles within Wizards of the Coast, with Natalie being a senior producer and Harless being the global events manager.

However, it’s their work on the Magic Story Podcast that was the topic of our discussion, and I was keen to know more about how reception to the Off The Record podcast felt, and how this episode even came to be.

Regarding the sheer popularity and reaction to the episode, both Natalie and Harless agreed it was a surprise to see the community so engrossed and abuzz with excitement for what was coming next. What caught me by surprise, though, was the extremely cautious approach to delivering Off The Record for fear of it falling flat.

On the conception and timing of Off The Record, Natalie had this to say: “It was definitely something new that we had not done on the podcast before, where it dropped in between sets. We had all of Lorwyn Eclipses' story wrapped; we gave no indication of what was going to happen next, and we did that purposefully - left on this cliffhanger to be continued - and then we drop Off The Record kind of out of the blue, with like, no context as to what this is.”

Natalie continues by touching on the overall reception, “We did not know how it was going to be received, whether story enthusiasts would pick up on what was happening. And so we didn’t give it a lot of pretense; we did not lead it up; we did not seed it. It exploded in a way I think that really took me by surprise. I was not expecting it to go off the rails.”

As a rather hilarious coincidence, Harless explained that she had not long returned from maternity leave and was dropping her baby off at daycare, listening to Off The Record and finding herself hugely invested in the episode just like the rest of us. This is further proof, if any was needed, that those within Wizards are just as big fans of the product as we are.

In-Universe Storytelling Continues To Be Essential To Magic: The Gathering

While a few pockets of disgruntled online players may have you believe otherwise, what is extremely apparent from my conversation with Natalie and Harless, who were also joined by Magic Story lead Roy Graham, is that in-universe storytelling is more crucial now than ever.

The Magic Story Podcast wouldn’t exist if it wasn’t, and while we are now approaching a capstone set in Reality Fracture, which will end a multi-year story arc, the shift into the 2027 MTG schedule presents some exciting opportunities to bring even more players into the in-universe lore.

Players who get into Magic: The Gathering through Universes Beyond sets are sticking around to play with in-universe sets too; Mark Rosewater reiterated this multiple times throughout my chat with him, and during any roundtable discussion he was part of. This means the Magic Story Podcast has the opportunity to play a huge role in building a new story in new worlds, helping continue the stream of Universes Beyond players turning into general Magic players.
