Rumor: Beyond Good and Evil 2 Is Still in the Works
According to a new report, the game is still in pre-production, with about 250 people working on it.
Ubisoft's action-adventure game Beyond Good and Evil 2 is reportedly still in development 18 years after it was first teased.
As reported by Origami Media (via Eurogamer), sources close to the game's development said that, between 2019 and 2022, Beyond Good and Evil 2 was envisioned as a highly multiplayer-focused, connected experience featuring numerous planets where players would be matched together and play alongside one another. The report also described the original concept as a "third place" where players could hang out with friends after work, similar to Fortnite or Destiny, which served as sources of inspiration. Players would control a blank character and join the adventures of Beyond Good and Evil's heroes as a passenger rather than the main character.
Since then, the project has reportedly evolved from small matchmade groups to more open-ended gameplay, then to team-based sessions for four players, and later to pairs. According to Origami Media, the current goal is a "solo-first" adventure with no mandatory online connection, a strong narrative, and optional co-op. The report also says the game is still in pre-production rather than full production. About 250 people are reportedly working on the game, and the team aims to reach the alpha phase.
Beyond Good and Evil 2 was teased at the UbiDays event back in 2008, with a first trailer revealed at the time. After nearly a decade of rumors and leaks, the game was officially announced at E3 2017. BGE2 is supposed to be a prequel to the original Beyond Good and Evil, released in 2003. In July 2020, a post on the game's official website assured fans that "Beyond Good and Evil 2 is well underway," and industry insider Tom Henderson claimed that playtesting of the game had started. The game has already earned the title of "the most delayed AAA game ever." Two years later, the developer shared an update via its official X/Twitter, stating that the title "is still in development."
