Wolverine’s Official PS5 Range Rekindles Anger Over Discless Future
You Won't Be Able To Play Physical Copies Of Wolverine On Your Wolverine PS5
PlayStation revealed a Wolverine-themed PS5 with matching accessories on Tuesday. It all looks pretty great. However, people quickly noticed that there’s no disc edition of the limited edition console, hammering home PlayStation's plans to end physical releases as we know them.
Wolverine's Special PS5s Are A Reminder That PlayStation Won't Reverse Course On Discs
The collection includes a Wolverine PS5 bundle that includes a digital edition of the console with a matching DualSense and code for the game, but no physical option. If you don’t want to buy a new console, you can give your PS5 or PS5 Pro a Wolverine makeover via the new covers. However, there aren't covers for disc versions of the console - you will need the additional matching disc drive cover for that.
Both the black and yellow cover and the adamantium-style PS5 Pro covers do appear to include a disc drive cover should you want one. Worth noting that the covers for the standard PS5 are for the newer slimmer model. There won't be Wolverine covers for either model of the base PS5, nor the newer model that has a disc drive built-in.
The DualSense controllers are also for everyone. PlayStation can’t stop you playing physical games with those.
As PS5 owners were looking over the new accessories, it began to dawn on many of them that this is another reminder that PlayStation has no intention of backing down despite the continued backlash over its decision to stop releasing games on discs in 2028. One of the hubs it uses to create discs is already in the process of being repurposed, and as demonstrated here, even with more than a year to go, accessories aren’t being made for consoles that have disc drives.
Wolverine Is Still Getting A Proper Physical Release
Wolverine is an odd place on which to solidify that stand. Insomniac’s upcoming superhero game will be here long before the death of PlayStation discs. It is getting a proper physical release. However, that physical version of the game will be unplayable on the limited edition PS5 being released alongside it.
It’s now a wait-and-see situation regarding which PS5 games will be released in time to have a disc and which ones are going to miss the cut-off. God of War Laufey will be here in early 2027, so it will have a proper physical release. The same applies to Final Fantasy 7 Revelation. However, the jury is still out on Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet. It’s been a while since Naughty Dog checked in, and if the game isn’t here by the end of 2027, its physical release will be relegated to a code in a box.
