Werewolf By Night 2 Return Gets New Status Update From MCU Director

Michael Giacchino is ready to make Werewolf by Night 2.

The Disney+ special served as Giacchino's proper launch into the director's chair amid his Oscar-winning music composition, as well as serving as the Marvel Cinematic Universe's first major dive into supernatural territory. Gael García Bernal led the cast as Jack Russell, a monster hunter who is summoned for a meeting with other hunters to vie for the powerful Bloodstone, while also having to hide his lycanthropic curse and ulterior motives.

Also starring Laura Donnelly and Harriet Sansom Harris, Werewolf by Night proved to be a smash hit upon its October 2022 release, garnering rave reviews for Giacchino's classic monster movie stylings and enjoyable diversion amid the MCU's divisive Phase Four outings. It would get an updated version the following year with a complete color format as part of Disney+'s Hallowstream collection in 2023.

Now, in an interview with ScreenRant's Tatiana Hullender on the Spider-Man: Brand New Day red carpet premiere, Michael Giacchino has offered an update on his potential return for Werewolf by Night 2. The director called on fans of the original MCU special to "rise up" and push for Marvel Studios to greenlight the sequel.

The Oscar winner further revealed that he and Marvel are "talking about" making Werewolf by Night 2, but admitted that "everything takes forever to do," and that there "is a lot of planning that has to happen" for the horror-centric sequel to get off the ground:

Michael Giacchino: Everything has to fit in a particular place at a particular time. Nothing moves as fast as we’d like it to. But, I hope one day that you will be sitting there watching another Werewolf by Night. That’s my hope.

The likelihood for Werewolf by Night 2 to get off the ground seemed high after the first film's release, as both co-executive producer Brian Gay and Kevin Feige confirmed it was the start of the MCU's exploration into the supernatural and monsters. Giacchino has also frequently teased having a variety of ideas on how to pick up from the first special's ending, while a report in late 2025 seemingly confirmed development was underway.

While said report was never clarified by Marvel, it was never outright debunked either. The most likely explanation for the delay in any kind of confirmation for Werewolf by Night 2's production is the studio's efforts to pull back on the amount of MCU releases over the past few years after multiple box office and critical misfires. Feige recently confessed to there having been more of a focus on quantity over quality, and that is why there are no new MCU movies coming between the releases of Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars.

Though Giacchino's note of talks being underway for Werewolf by Night 2 could have extended back to the first special's release, Marvel's San Diego Comic-Con 2026 showing pointed to the horror sequel likely ramping up behind the scenes. The studio finally confirmed Ryan Gosling would be leading the Ghost Rider reboot with Shawn Levy directing, alluding to the MCU shifting toward the supernatural stories set up by the original and Oscar Isaac's Moon Knight.

Given the first special was largely a standalone story with only broad references to the wider MCU, it would make sense for Werewolf by Night 2 to be saved for after Secret Wars' reported soft reboot of the franchise. This would not only prevent any kind of major retcons needed to bridge the eponymous character into larger events, but also give the MCU a fresh new tone to focus on after The Infinity and Multiverse Sagas.
