A Marvel executive has confirmed when fans can expect to see X-Men ’97 season 3 and 4 on Disney+.
X-Men ’97 season 2 is almost over, but the animated series has a bright future ahead of it. Seasons 3 and 4 are in development, and it’s previously been reported that there will be a shorter wait time between future X-Men ’97 seasons after the two-year gap between seasons 1 and 2. Now Brad Winderbaum, Head of Marvel Television, Animation, Comics & Franchise, has shared the planned release window for seasons 3 and 4.
In an interview with Collider, Winderbaum stated that “season 3 is going to come out next year and season 4 the year after that,” meaning they’ll be released in 2027 and 2028, respectively. He also acknowledged that “a year feels too long” considering how, with X-Men: The Animated Series, he remembers “watching these every single day after school, and then they would be on as reruns.” Winderbaum added:
X-Men was a constant element of my life growing up, and I just want to make as many [seasons] as fast as possible for people to see.
Winderbaum went on to say that while the release window for X-Men ’97 seasons 3 and 4 is mapped out, the tradeoff is that it’s unlikely that these future seasons will get expanded episode orders. He explained that “streaming has its own limitations,” and when deciding between whether a new season should be released sooner or have more episodes, he tends "to vote to get them out as soon as possible, even if you have to save some stories for subsequent seasons.” X-Men ’97 season 1 comprised 10 episodes, while season 2 has nine.
Following Marvel firing X-Men ’97 creator Beau DeMayo ahead of season 1’s premiere, Matthew Chauncey was hired to succeed him as head writer for season 3, as season 2 was already in the works. It was confirmed in October 2025 that production had begun on season 3, and this past May, it was revealed that X-Men ’97 season 4 scripts were being written. Jake Castorena serves as the show’s supervising producer.
X-Men ’97 season 2 primarily follows the mutant superheroes’ conflict with Apocalypse across three different time periods. The season has also stood out for spotlighting teams like X-Force and X-Factor, as well as featuring side antagonists like the Acolytes of Magneto, Danger, and the Brood. Notable season 2 guest stars have included Gates McFadden as Mother Askani, John de Lancie as Rama-Tut/Kang the Conqueror, Michael Johnson as young Nathan Summers, and Michael Dorn as Baal.
The X-Men '97 season 2 finale arrives on Wednesday, August 12. After that, fellow animated offering Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man season 2 is still expected to premiere sometime before 2026 is over. Elsewhere on the X-Men front, various characters from the Fox franchise will appear in Avengers: Doomsday, which hits theaters on December 18. Thunderbolts* director Jake Schreier is also working on an X-Men reboot movie that has cast Samara Weaving as Emma Frost, while Kit O’Connor is in talks to play Cyclops.
