Nintendo Switch 2 Price Increase Officially Confirmed With New Pricing
Anyone else remember when consoles used to get cheaper later into their life cycles and not more expensive? Simpler times. Nintendo has joined Xbox and PlayStation in increasing the price of their latest console, and now Nintendo has dropped new specifics on what to expect from the Nintendo Switch 2.
Back in May, Nintendo officially increased the Switch 2's price in the United States, Canada, and Europe, a move that will be made effective from September 1 this year. Then, in June, it was announced that prices would also be going up in South Korea. We now have a few more details on this unfortunate price increase.
While we knew the price of the Nintendo Switch 2 would be going up in the United Kingdom like pretty much everywhere else, we didn't know the exact details of the new price. Nintendo has now confirmed the new pricing on social media, so we have a pretty clear picture of the new Nintendo Switch 2 pricing around the world. It paints a pretty bleak picture, much like the PlayStation and Xbox price increases before it.
In the UK, a Nintendo Switch 2 will now cost £419.99, which is a £24 increase from its original £395.99. It could definitely be worse, then. However, once again, I have to point out that consoles getting more expensive is really not something we've ever seen before.
In Japan, the Switch 2 will be going up by ¥10,000. The US and Canada will see a stepper $50 increase, and in Europe, the price is being raised by €30. All new pricing comes into effect from September 1, so you may want to think about getting a Switch 2 in the next few weeks.
Console prices are going up for a variety of reasons, but one of the most prevalent factors is that the RAM and storage chips needed to actually make the hardware has become a lot more expensive. This is a result of the increasing number of data centers needed to keep moving artificial intelligence forward, so don't expect this to get better any time soon.
For now, if you're set on playing The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake when it releases later this year, you're going to have to bite the bullet and pay extra for a Nintendo Switch 2 unless you get one before September 1.
