Maika Monroe's It Follows 2 Gets Exciting New Filming Update After Major Delay (Exclusive)
Maika Monroe's They Follow is finally moving forward in a big way.
Development on a follow-up to the horror-thriller It Follows had floated for years following its acclaimed 2014 release, with writer/director David Robert Mitchell teasing plans to further explore the lore surrounding the mysterious stalking entity of the first film. The sequel would finally be greenlit in late 2023, with Mitchell and Monroe returning, respectively, and Neon acquiring the project, now titled They Follow.
Now, during an interview with ScreenRant's Tatiana Hullender for his new sci-fi thriller The End of Oak Street, David Robert Mitchell has offered an exciting filming update for They Follow. Though the writer/director confessed that he could "say very little" about what to expect from the horror sequel, he did confirm that production is officially underway after initially hitting a major delay, including that the team "just finished the fourth week of filming," and he is "very excited" to share the film "when it's ready."
Monroe had originally revealed back in Summer 2024 that They Follow had been intended to begin shooting in early 2025, which could have put the long-awaited horror sequel on screens later that year, given it already has a distributor lined up. However, the It Follows sequel would subsequently find its filming plans delayed, as both Monroe and Mitchell found their schedules becoming ever-busier with The End of Oak Street, the Colleen Hoover adaptation Reminders of Him and horror-thriller Victorian Psycho.
Mitchell's confirmation that filming is well underway does align with recent reports for They Follow, which slated the movie to kick off shooting sometime before the end of Summer 2026. It was also recently revealed that Naomi Ackie would be continuing her horror genre run in the sequel following her genre debut with the Mike Flanagan-penned Clayface in the DC Universe, albeit with her character details in the new It Follows tale being kept under wraps.
With Mitchell revealing that They Follow is already four weeks into filming, the next point of curiosity is what kind of milestone this is for the horror sequel. The first film was said to have completed principal photography within four or five weeks of shooting, and should the writer/director be utilizing the same minimalist approach as It Follows, it may very well already be near the end of production. However, with a decade of story to fill in between the two films, it also seems possible Mitchell is going bigger and bolder with the new film, requiring more time to shoot.
Regardless of how much is left on its filming schedule, the fact that They Follow is already well underway in shooting marks a promising sign for the sequel arriving sometime in 2027. With next year also bringing everything from Flanagan's highly-anticipated Exorcist reboot to James Wan and Blumhouse's Paranormal Activity 8 and the long-awaited Quiet Place Part III, 2027 is certainly shaping up to be a big year for the horror genre.
