Everything We Know About Sony & Marvel’s Spider-Man 5

This article contains SPOILERS for Spider-Man: Brand New Day.Spider-Man: Brand New Day has come and gone, turning the attention to Tom Holland's possible next entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe franchise, Spider-Man 5. Before Holland came along, the most a live-action Spider-Man movie actor had gotten to was a full trilogy. Tobey Maguire starred in three solo films, with the first two among the very best Spider-Man movies of all time.

Then came Andrew Garfield's The Amazing Spider-Man franchise, which clocked out after two films, as Sony changed its plans for the franchise, canceling the planned third movie and partnering with Marvel Studios. Holland's MCU Spider-Man movies have consistently grown at the box office, with Spider-Man: Brand New Day set to gross over $2 billion to become Spidey's highest-grossing film thus far.

In every MCU Spider-Man movie, Peter Parker is joined by other characters from the wider Marvel Studios shared universe. Iron Man, Captain America, Doctor Strange, Nick Fury, the Hulk, the Punisher, and more MCU heroes have shown up across the four Spider-Man movies co-produced by Marvel and Sony. In 2021's Spider-Man: No Way Home, even Maguire and Garfield's Spider-Man were brought into the fold.

2026's Spider-Man: Brand New Day started a fresh chapter for the franchise, with Peter's story taking a more mature turn, now that he is out of high school as a young adult. Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, not Jon Watts, the Spider-Man movie has become instrumental to the future of the MCU in multiple ways, including how it sets up Spider-Man 5.

Spider-Man 5 Is Not Yet Confirmed

At the time of writing, Spider-Man 5 has yet to be officially announced by Sony, Marvel, or Holland. However, there is simply no way the movie will not happen. After all, Spider-Man: Brand New Day is projected to become one of the three highest-grossing movies of all time, far surpassing the box office hopes Marvel and Sony had set for the film, which were already high in the first place. Talking to Serieously after Spider-Man: Brand New Day broke opening weekend records, Holland teased Spider-Man 5, saying, "It's on the cards," though he later added that there was nothing clear at that moment.

Holland was not the only party involved to address whether Spider-Man 5 is coming after Spider-Man: Brand New Day's impressive theatrical performance. In an interview with Variety, Sony Pictures head Tom Rothman reiterated there was nothing confirmed, but it is the studio's intent that Holland will be back for another Spider-Man movie. Finally, Cretton went a step beyond, talking about how Spider-Man: Brand New Day's ending could connect to Spider-Man 5. Talking to Deadline, the director, who first joined the MCU in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, talked about going over theories, "Knowing there will be another movie."

Spider-Man 5 Cast: Who Could Return & Who Might Debut?

Spider-Man: Brand New Day has made it pretty clear that no matter what happens in this MCU franchise, three actors should always be present. Chief among them is Tom Holland. Spider-Man has always been popular in live-action, but the reason the MCU Spider-Man movies keep seeing their box office increase to shocking heights is the fact that audiences absolutely love the Holland iteration of Peter Parker. Marvel Studios is likely still a good few years from introducing Miles Morales, who is confirmed to be on the cards at some point after Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse releases in theaters in 2027.

As such, Holland's Peter Parker will lead Spider-Man 5, and a new actor as Miles could likely cameo at most. Zendaya's MJ and Jacob Batalon's Ned Leeds, who now have both dealt with knowing Peter is Spider-Man in different ways after Doctor Strange's spell made them forget about him, will most likely be back if they managed to play a major role in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Possible returning characters also include Aunt May, through flashbacks, and players like Jon Bernthal's the Punisher, Sadie Sink's Jean Grey, Michael Mando's Scorpion, Marvin Jones III's Tombstone, and Liza Colón-Zayas' Jean DeWolff.

As for new characters who could make their MCU debuts in Spider-Man 5, there are a few interesting options. Marvel fans continue to ask for Peter to meet new love interests from the comics, with Black Cat and Gwen Stacy remaining popular picks, especially since Zendaya's MJ told Peter she did not love him in Spider-Man: Brand New Day despite being told about their relationship, as she does not remember their time together. With a piece of the Venom symbiote still in the MCU after Spider-Man: No Way Home, Spider-Man 5 could also debut its version of Eddie Brock/Venom.

Spider-Man 5 Release Date: When Could The MCU Movie Be Released?

At the moment, Marvel Studios has set two movies for 2028, with only Avengers: Secret Wars being on the franchise's slate for 2027. Those are Black Panther 3, which will be released in theaters on December 15, 2028, and Ryan Gosling's Ghost Rider movie with Deadpool & Wolverine director Shawn Levy, which just got a 2028 release window. Likely joining them as the MCU's third movie of 2028 is the X-Men reboot, which is being helmed by Thunderbolts*'s Jake Schreier. After Sink's Jean Grey debuted in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Samara Weaving is reportedly playing Emma Frost, while Kit Connor is Cyclops.

That leaves Spider-Man 5's release date for 2029, at the earliest. This would be longer than the 2-year gap between movies in Holland's first Spider-Man trilogy, but shorter than the 5-year gap between No Way Home and Brand New Day. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Cretton's live-action Naruto movie will start filming in the first half of 2027, so it should be released in 2028. As such, the most likely scenario for Spider-Man 5's release date is somewhere between 2029 and 2030, with Holland's Spider-Man appearing in one or both of the Avengers movies between now and then.

How Spider-Man: Brand New Day's Ending Sets Up Spider-Man 5

Spider-Man: Brand New Day ended with Jean Grey not reverting Doctor Strange's spell and going off on her own. As such, Peter and MJ are still broken up, which could lead to another attempt at reconciliation in Spider-Man 5 or the debut of a new love interest, with candidates including Gwen Stacy and Black Cat. That said, Ned remembered his secret handshake with Peter right at the end of the movie. Spider-Man 5 should explore whether it was just muscle memory, or the bond between the two was strong enough that Peter's best friend would remember him once he finally reached out.

As for Spider-Man: Brand New Day's post-credits scene, which teased Holland's Peter Parker, or a version of Spider-Man, popping up in space, as shown by Ned's Spidey Tracker, that mystery should be resolved before Spider-Man 5. The fact that the MCU Spider-Man franchise is Earth-based and that the tease was connected to space, when two Avengers movies about the multiverse with Robert Downey Jr.'s Doctor Doom as their main villain are on the way, suggests that Spider-Man 5 will not feature the answer to the question the post-credits scene sets up, as an Avengers movie should answer it before then.
