Rebecca Ferguson’s Underrated 104-Minute Sci-Fi Horror Finds New Life On Streaming

Six years before Silo premiered on Apple TV, Rebecca Ferguson starred in another sci-fi project that's finding renewed success on the streaming charts right now.

Ferguson has appeared in several sci-fi movies and shows over the years, including Dune, Dune: Part Two and Men in Black: International. Her most recent role in this genre is Silo, which is currently in its third season on Apple TV and tells the story of a society that lives in a gigantic silo as a supposed means of protection.

However, before Ferguson landed the role of Juliette Nichols on Silo, she appeared in 2017's Life with Jake Gyllenhaal and Ryan Reynolds.

Almost a decade later, the sci-fi/horror film has found a whole new audience on Hulu, where it's currently No. 9 on the streamer's Top 10 chart in the United States (as of August 12, 2026), behind The Devil Wears Prada 2, Solo Mio, Jurassic World, Muzzle: City of Wolves, Jurassic Park, Men in Black, Twilight and The Avengers.

Rounding out the Top 10 is 2012.

Life is also streaming in Lithuania on the Apple TV Store. While it was at No. 15 as recently as August 8, the film is no longer charting in that country.

Directed by Daniel Espinosa, with a script by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, Life centers on astronauts aboard the International Space Station who research life on Mars, but their discovery turns out to be more treacherous than they ever thought possible. Along with Ferguson, Gyllenhaal and Reynolds, the cast also includes Hiroyuki Sanada, Ariyon Bakare, Olga Dihovichnaya and Naoko Mori.

After its release in March 2017, Life received mixed-to-positive reviews from critics, who gave it a 67% score on Rotten Tomatoes; audiences, meanwhile, weren't as receptive with a 55% score.

At the box office, the film debuted in fourth place on opening weekend and grossed $100.5 million across its entire theatrical run. Despite that disappointment, Life did earn a Saturn Award nomination for Best Science Fiction Film.

Life was originally supposed to arrive in theaters in May 2017, one week before the release of Alien: Covenant, the sixth installment in the long-running $1.8 billion Alien franchise that went on to gross $240.9 million at the box office.

20th Century Fox changed Life's release date to March so it wouldn't compete with that film and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales,

Speaking of which, the plot of Life shares several similarities to Alien and could have been considered the perfect replacement for that series of movies. Some fans even considered it an unofficial prequel to Alien.

However, the combination of its box office returns and reviews, along with several major motion pictures coming to theaters around that time, including Logan, Kong: Skull Island, Beauty and the Beast, Power Rangers, The Boss Baby and Smurfs: The Lost Village, Life got lost in the shuffle and became a forgotten film from 2017.

Now, though, sci-fi fans can discover and re-watch Rebecca Ferguson's Life thanks to its availability on Hulu.
